THE GOOD
-recruiting has been great (second only to Saban)
-player conditioning has been excellent (Moffitt)
-player development has been good (less freaks like Kiki, Matheu, Montgomery, etc)
-program has been run mostly clean with high graduation rates
-winning percentage is excellent and stadium sells out every game (as good as it gets)
-a National Championship and 2 SEC titles

THE BAD
-95+ % of all games are close (includes good and bad teams)
-coaching staff decisions have been marginal at best (less Chief) ie. Maleveto, Stud as OC with no OL coaching, etc (position coaches have been hit/miss)
-team discipline has been poor with preseason arrests that have negatively affected the season (somewhat common with elite players...happens other places too)
-game day coaching has been poor (strategy and use of players... Has gotten worse over the last 2 years)
-game day organization and discipline has been poor (penalties, delay of game, busted plays, use of time outs, etc)

What are your thoughts?

I love some Les. Main negative for me is the game day coaching.

I get really pissed at crazy game time adjustments or lack thereof. Despite this, I frickING LOVE LES.

The man is pure class, wins, and recruits incredibly. LSU is a premiere national team and he has us sailing smoothly.

While it was obvious that the disaster that was the 2008 season had rather severe effects on the mentality of JLee, I don't think we ever truly appreciated the effect it had on the mentality of Les Miles. After that season our offense went into a shell, and for the most part of the last 4 years it has stayed there. For the record, I think Les will make major strides forward this year. He trusts Cam enough to open up the offense a bit, and when he has some success, he'll feel more comfortable. A year or two from now we will have "Lesticles" back. Then the SEC will have their hands full.

10+ win seasons 6/8 seasons, finished ranked 7/8 seasons, 2 SEC championships, and 1 national championship. I'm a fan.

The off the field stuff is concerning.

THE GOOD

Good synopsis

THE BAD
-95+ % of all games are close (includes good and bad teams)

Without getting out the calculator, I'm pretty sure this is a gross exaggeration.

quote:

-team discipline has been poor with preseason arrests that have negatively affected the season (somewhat common with elite players...happens other places too)

We've had our high profile incidents, but as you note, others have theirs, too. I'd say we're on the low end of the misbehavior scale relative to other schools. I'd be more concerned if nothing was being reported, because that would mean it's all being covered up. 85 college guys will get into a certain amount of trouble, athletes or not, and reported or not. There have been numerous threads on how it was "back in the day," and in a lot of ways, players were more out of control than these guys have ever dreamed of being. The difference is, nowadays when something happens, it's on the Rant within five minutes, often accompanied by video.

quote:

-game day coaching has been poor (strategy and use of players... Has gotten worse over the last 2 years)

Most of this has been due to our QB issues. When the offense is one dimensional, nothing works right. We'll see how the addition of Cam changes things.

quote:

-game day organization and discipline has been poor (penalties, delay of game, busted plays, use of time outs, etc)

Valid criticism. It's not Miles' strong suit, although he has worked on it and gotten better IYAM.

honestly, it's probably been the best 8 year stretch in LSU football history.

Outside of 2011 81% of SEC games are within 7 points or we have the occasional loss. Most OOC games are against directional state so those should be blowouts.

Hyperbole

quote:

Stud as OC

Stud had damn good success as OC at Bowling Green and he did fairly well last year towards the middle when the younger offensive line starting meshing together. While Stud isn't a great OC, he's definitely better than what some people make him out to be. Meyer tried to hire him as the OC at Ohio St for a reason.

quote:

team discipline has been poor with preseason arrests

Poor? More like better than average. Most other teams have WAY worse discipline issues. Miles has done a great job in this department. A couple fights per year is no big deal compared to armed robbery, rape, murder, etc...

quote:

game day coaching has been poor (strategy and use of players... Has gotten worse over the last 2 years)

It's gotten progressively worse each game? No because each game has ups and downs with a plethora of factors.

quote:

game day organization and discipline has been poor

Another over exaggeration. Every teams has some hiccups. LSU only has one major screw up about once every season or every other season. Not every single game.

Though the penalties were excessive last year. Mingo would get 2 offsides almost every game

I had Season Tickets for Stovall, Arnsparger, Archer and Hallman. I would swap all of those for the last 8 years with Miles!! I do not complain because I have seen worse!!

You should post a link with that dumbassery.

More retarded thoughts as he has one of the premier staffs in the country.
An ex FBS OC as OL coach, 100 NFL-win OC, Chavis, 'nuff said.

does not equal

-a National Championship and 2 SEC titles

He's a great college coach. Certainly not the best but still great.

When people talk about firing him whenever there is a bad loss or losing a recruit I always think "ok fine we can fire him but first tell me who LSU is guaranteed to get to replace him that is better?"

Some good posts so far, but this is the best one. It's funny; it's pithy; and it's true.

ButI'd sure miss Miles' personality if we had NS.

I think from this year forward will be the real measure of CLM at LSU. Finally we have strong coordinators on both sides of the ball. I truly believe this is what's been missing on the offense. Coach Stud was ok but you know he wasn't gonna stand up to Les. When you have 3 offensive coordinators you have none.

The Defense will be fine again. Top 15 defense is plenty good enough.

For me it always comes down to one question: Who out there would do a better job ?

My answer is that I don't see a better coach who would be a better fit here at LSU than Les Miles.

So are you correcting the poster who was correct or helping to validate his statement ? Because 2011 shouldn't be removed nor should cup cakes as the OP said 95+% of all games in a fit of delusion. That alone renders his option as wild at best

My thoughts are that Les is great and he'll the numbers will show he is the best coach in school history when he's done.

I agree with Lacour

There I said it. And boy oh boy are some of you in for a ride awakening when the man moves on.

Probably? The only stretch that comes even close is 58-65 and there was a 5-4-1, 7-4 and 8-3 seasons in that stretch

ETA: and I personally prefer his personality over the other guy. He fits us as a fan base to a fricking T

This ain't high school.
Seldom does one see Miles on sidelines with a playsheet.
A majority of FBS head coaches coordinate building the gameplan/playlist with assistants late week, and leave the Saturday calls to the OC/DC.
Those head coaches just take the flack from clueless couch-coaches like yourself.
