I think if you check our third down efficiency you'd realize how wrong you are. Especially compared to the rest of the country.

3rd and chavis was alive and well this year.

Do you have memory loss?

I still think he's a great dc, but it is annoying to give up a first time often on third and 14

Are you really complaining about being 20th in the country in 3rd down conversion percentage D?

I think he was a bit more aggressive on third down this year, therefore the perception was we were better, when in reality we were not.

Last year he'd have Chad Jones 30 yards back and soft coverage elsewhere so it Third and Chavis was easy to see and target.

Actually we were ranked 20th in the nation in 3rd down defense this year, so I stand somewhat corrected. We were 34th last year, which was better than I would have guessed.

For me this one of the year's biggest surprises, that Chavis would be willing to be so aggressive. I admit I sold the man short, even though I should know better. He adjusted to his talent and showed that his rep as a top notch DC was well deserved. Kudo's Chief, and my apologies.

It never existed. This year we saw the new problem of not having any idea how to prep for Auburn or Ole Miss.

Maybe the OP was hunting during the Arky and ole Miss games and missed the Auburn game and the first half against Alabama?

(this is NOT a knock on the OP)

Wow so talent had an affect on the Defensive stats??? Amazing!!! I wonder if our Offensive could just maybe been affected by the QB play! Hmmmmm... Great talent makes coordinators look good and bad talent makes coordinators look like crap.

Flame away!!!

Only if the point you're trying to make is that we got 4th and Chavis'd a lot this year.

There were stats posted before the season that show that 3rd and Chavis was not a myth. He was definitely trending behind the pack.

Agreed. After the AU game more than one defended his scheme and explained the failure in terms of poor tackling, Cam, etc. The OM game kinda of squashed that. Chief needs to try a differnt tack against spread option O's.

Lest someone think I'm being unduly critical I thought our D (less #37) did OK against Arky and I would never have guessed two years ago that KS11 would be the LB that he is today. Chavis can flat coach LB's.

Typical....

3rd and Chavis is largely exagerrated...

So what is your position?

Instead of all y'all acting like two year olds. Is your stance that our D was not effective this year?

Chavis better go to summer school for the Oregon game. If he plays Oregon like Auburn, the stadium light bill will go up just to post the Oregon score.

How about..."First and Chavis with 10 seconds left in the half and 80 yards to go"?

There has never been a scheme that has made a tackle. Players make tackles, period. You don't stop the spread with some magic scheme. You stop it by your players executing the defense and making tackles.

If there was some magic scheme out there to stop the spread, it would be on film and every DC in the country would have copied it.

Casual fans are infatuated with "schemes" because they really don't know what "schemes" are and if you put them in a film room and showed them 5 teams running 5 different "schemes" they wouldn't be able to identify the differences. Until you learn more about football you should refrain from being critical about the coaches strategies.
