Incredible turnaround. Two weeks earlier LSU had lost at home to Ole Miss, 21-19 after David Browndyke missed a 30 yard field goal at the end.(had TD been around that night no telling how many bannings there would have been.)

Ole Miss was actually pretty good that year and after beating us they "controlled their own destiny."

In what may have been the last of the double headers at Mississippi Memorial Stadium, Tennessee upset Ole Miss in the first game, 22-10. Now, LSU "controlled its own destiny" along with Alabama and Auburn at least for shares of the title.

LSU had ended the 5 game losing streak to State the prior year holding on for a 17-15 win in Tiger Stadium.State ,under new coach and former star QB Rockey Felker, had started off the season 6-1 and ranked #13 including an upset of then top ten Tennessee in Knoxville. But talent and depth caught up with State as Auburn and then Alabama pummeled them.

LSU beat them worse. LSU led 23-0 at halftime and kept it up. LSU had 580 yards to State's 214. On State's last offensive play, Don Smith actually completed a pass for td, but was ruled having crossed the line of scrimmage before passing.

That same night Georgia upset Auburn knocking Auburn out of the title chase and much to the Sugar Bowl committee's chagrin, Auburn then beat Alabama two weeks later to give the Tigers the outright SEC title.

You brought up a great memory from this game. Went with a bunch of LSU buddies to that game and caught a football in the stands after from LSU players tossing them to the LSU section. Still have the football in my collection and will pass it down to my sons. Great game and memory!

Was a member of the LSU drumlin at the time - I think about this game often. Felt like LSU was turning a corner

I was in the band too. Great memory of that game. I think the next time we went to Jackson was the game that we had no buses to go play Ole Miss...

That was the Lawyer Tillman "Reverse to Victory" game.

Wish I could have attended one of those Jackson games.

A little bit before my time, but I did watch some on TigerVision as a kid.

Used to walk from my old house in Fondren to that stadium to see OM / MSU / LSU games.

Good times.

Wasn't that the year we played Neb and got pummeled in the Sugar Bowl? I was young but seem to remember them running all over us in the Dome.

I live in the Jackson area and pretty frequently hear people talking about these matchups. the stadium is very small by today's standards, but I wish we could play a game there on occasion.

Made that game. Great weekend in the RV. Enough barbeque for everyone. Double header was great. Lots of fans. No issues with people drunk or otherwise.

State won first six that year. Auburn destroyed them. LSU. Picked up where Auburn left off. MSU lost the rest of their games. I think they only won one the next year.

Yes, 30-15.

Two years before that in the Sugar Bowl, LSU led Nebraska 10-7 at halftime and lost 28-10.

Two years before that in the Orange Bowl, LSU led Nebraska 17-7 but lost 21-20.

Three losses to Nebraska in the '80s.

As a fan that never saw that team play, I really enjoyed reading that. Great summary of what sounds like a great year for the fans. Thank you for posting it

We won the SEC title that night, our first title in 16 seasons. And LSU had a huge crowd in Jackson that night.

Wow I remember that game. My brother and I drove up to see if we could hang with what everyone was saying was a Miss St team that was going to steamroll us over. Loved the look on the State fans after every score they were talking some crap before the kick off. Lol. Also made the next years game in Jackson vs Ole Piss. Spanked them 42-13 only to break my heart losing to Bama 22-10 the next week. That was the year I thought we would win our 2nd Natty.

I was there. I vividly remember State trying to get rid of the goose egg on the scoreboard by kicking a FG late in the game. It was into a stiff wind, and the ball seemed to blow backwards to land just short.
