30 years ago tonight in Auburn, Raion Hill was on "fire!'

I keep getting older and the board keeps getting younger. 
Although both LSU and Auburn are charter members of the SEC, they didn't play that often until 1988 when the league went from 6 games to 7. But for so many years there would be some off the wall event like this.
During the first half of the game in Auburn a fire started at an old auxillary gym near the stadium and it burned down. Fortunately for us we were sitting in the NE ez basically blocked by the East Upper deck. But there was a werid gasp going on throughout the stadium and the PA guy came on telling everyone to be calm. We were like what the heck?
The game itself was crazy enough. Both were ranked around #20. Auburn trailed 10-9 and LSU's Raion Hill had a pick 6 to make it 17-9 midway in the 4th. With about a minute left Auburn scored to make it 17-15 and lined up for two. 1996 was the first year of NCAA overtime so if they score we will have the SEC's first OT. Dameyune Craig lofts one for two points and it's picked off by....Raion Hill who runs it in for a 19-15 lead. Auburn got the onside kick but threw another pick on the next play and the game ended shortly thereafter.

We couldn't see anything but a little smoke. Now after the game headed out that side to car to our car it looked like a war zone.

Remember watching this game as a kid. Looking back it’s shocking how the game wasn’t stopped. If something like that happened today it would absolutely be handled differently.

I was in the stands thinking the same thing. My mom put on a train to meet my dad in Birmingham from Slidell. No phone, no gps tracker…. Just make sure you don’t get off the train. We stayed in the team hotel and David lefleur was flipping off teammates that morning. Great day. Fans leaving were chanting “ the roof the roof the roof is on fire we don’t need no water let the mother f&$@ burn.”

That was a special game and LSU began to become a much more equal opponent to Auburn after this game. Some incredible late 90’s and early and even mid 2000’s games between the two.
