2023 Pitching

Skippy just started a similar thread but I want to dive into the signing class a little deeper.
I only see 4 pitchers I would like to keep, Floyd, Reyzelman, Gervase and Coleman. Three of them are draft risk and Coleman is coming back from injury.
Devin Fontenot, Shaffer, Hilliard and Vietmeier are all out of eligibility.
I would say everyone else is expendable or on the bubble. Some will obviously stick around but they will have to prove their worth.
This won't be anything new for our draft gurus but it is a cliffnote view of our incoming class.
We have 14 pitchers signed, if you include Guidry who is a IF and pitcher. Out of that group I expect to lose 3 to the draft, could be more, could be less. Snelling looks all but gone as he has moved up to the first round of most mock drafts.
Noot, Shores, Misiorowski and Kennedy are high draft risk but I'm optimistically thinking we keep 2 of them.
As for potential starters, there are quite a few. Snelling, Noot, Shores and (JUCO) Misiorowski are draft risks more for potential than polish. It would be awesome to get them to campus. They could be immediate starters but I see them more as backend guys, similar to Reyzelman.
Kennedy has the control and three pitches you want from a starter. He is a lefty and really wants to go to college. I think he starts for us next year.
There are quite a few options in the rest of the class. Herring is a lefty that has three pitches and is very productive in HS. Ackenhausen and Siravo are two JUCO pitchers with starter potential. Bronzini is a big lefty with three pitches. Bucknam is the Canadian with potential. Moffet is a strongly built righty with three pitches and high intellect. I wouldn't be surprised to see a starter emerge from that group.
Applebey is a 6'8" JUCO with a big arm as well. DJ Primeaux might be the least heralded out of this group but I would said the same about Dutton last year. Primeaux is a lefty that can touch 90 so he isn't a scrub.
Then there is the whole portal thing and we are still looking at JUCO. I expect us to add some arms there, if we can pull a starter remains to be seen.
As Lester Earl and Skippy said, expect this current pitching staff to be gutted. With this signing class and the portal I expect the pitching to be a strength next year.
Hitting might take a drop with Berry and Doughty gone but it will still be a strength. Add a couple of infielders (Guidry, Romero, portal) and maybe a complete catcher (Neal or portal), like I think we will and this team is going to be really good next year.

Thanks for the 2023 player summary, there is a lot there to be excited about. I am hopeful that Coach Johnson can find us some SEC level starters, more pitching depth, some quality infielders and generally elevate our program.

Appreciate the breakdown.
It's evident from the press conference yesterday that CJJ is committed to bringing Championships back to LSU.
I'm confident he's the "relationship" guy we need to bring in big recruits. You can tell that this team bought in to his philosophy all year.
Players want to play for Jay.

I'm not giving Johnson all the credit for this class because Cain had much of it already. Johnson and staff did add some key pieces though.
I love recruiting and that irked me about Mainieri more than anything. It was obvious he had gotten complacent.
when we were searching for his replacement, my number one priority was someone that loved to recruit. Johnson is that man and built a staff with recruiting in mind. I'm really excited about the future of LSU baseball under Johnson. 2023 will just be the beginning.

I would keep Taylor and Collins as well, Taylor didn’t look good this regional, but he’s young and he had some quality innings this season.

Taylor, Collins and Cooper will most likely still be on this team next year. Taylor has huge potential and Collins and Cooper are reliable. There are others that I expect to keep as well.
If we carry 19 pitchers next year. We could bring in 10 or 12 just from this class and probably a couple more from the portal. There isn't a lot of wiggle room for the guys on the current roster. Like I said they are going to have to earn at it, as it should be at LSU.

I would think after this class our lefty problem will be solved.
A lot of pitchers with size in this class as well.

Romero
What percent chance do you think he makes it to campus?

Ty Floyd, Bryce Collins, Reyzelman, Gervase, Cooper, Dutton, Taylor, Coleman, and Lansville all should be back. Cale Lansville flashed a couple times midweek but he was a highly rated arm and I still think he has tons of potential working with Kelly. It's also possible Reyz/Gervase leave through the draft.
Grant Fontenot also didn't throw this year (doghouse, I Think) but he was mowing down our guys in the fall, he should be back as well then you can fill in the gaps from there with who makes it from the draft + the portal for starters.

We have a good chance with Romero. He has know Johnson since 8th grade. His two sisters were excellent college SS's. The relationship is there with the staff and the family upbringing is there for college.
Romero is a left handed hitter, more know for his bat than his glove. That being said, he is not a power hitter. He has had some shoulder issues this year as well. If he doesn't go first round, I think he makes it to campus.
I don't necessarily feel he is the definite answer at SS if he makes it to campus. He could be but it isn't a given. I think SS next year will be a battle between Romero, Guidry, Thompson and probably a portal guy. There are a few good SS's in the portal already and I know we are looking. Simon is a possibility as well.

Hopefully there isn’t a 6’0 160 pound mid 80’s fastball thrower from somewhere around Baton Rouge that no one has heard of they are skipping over that ends up at a mid major and ends up being good. I don’t think I can handle another Tanner Hall situation.

Never heard this. Can you elaborate please

I've seen Not pitch in person quite a few times. He throws an effortless 93 mph fastball with not a lot of movement but excellent control. Has a an above average breaking pitch. But I also think he will sign as long as they get close to money he wants

Fontenot looked pretty good in the fall. He wasn't setting the world on fire but looked as though he could contribute.
He hasn't thrown a pitch this year. Posters on here that are in the know, say it wasn't injury or performance related. If that is true, than he did something to be put in the doghouse. I don't think anyone knows exactly what he did but he hasn't entered the portal yet so he definitely could be a contributor next year.

You listed 10 pitchers. Not to mention if Fowler and Hasty learn some control or if Hellmers, Money and Edwards develop an out pitch they could stick around as well.
I think they all have a shot but with a big signing class plus maybe some portal arms, the numbers will be tight. They are going to have to earn it and that's where LSU should be.

He loves Dutton , he’s here to stay for sure

yeah but the guys you just listed didn't contribute much. Our pitchers weren't BAD this year. In fact, most of those guys came together to earn a top 5 ERA in the SEC. We need a couple front line starters but I see nothing wrong with what a lot of those guys gave you this year. They were asked to do way too much down the stretch and fell apart.
I'm not saying they will all come back and I agree they should earn it but I think alot of the guys I originally listed did that? I mean our bullpen was awesome for most of the year.

I don't know if he was in the doghouse for sure but there was never an injury reported on him and he didn't throw a single inning all year. Maybe academic? Not sure. all I knows is in the fall/spring scrimmages he was sitting in the mid 90s and striking out a ton of our own guys and was being talked up as someone that could contribute right away so I just find it interesting what happened.
