2017 Season In Context

I've seen some posts suggesting that 9 wins is a good first season and that many predicted 9 wins before the season, so Orgeron at the very least met expectations. Although 9 wins, in a vacuum, is a decent first season, when this season is put into context, winning 9 games can be described as nothing else but a disappointment.
Let's start with the 2012 season. Many people believe the downfall of the LSU football program began after 1/9/12, so let's start with the season following that game.
In 2012 we went 10-3. Our SOS was 11, and the teams that we beat had a combined record of 63-61 for a winning % of 50.8%.
In 2013 we went 10-3. Our SOS was again 11, and the teams we beat had a combined record of 61-66 for a winning % of 48%.
In 2014 we went 8-5. Our SOS was 7, and the teams we beat had a combined record of 46-47 for a winning % of 49.5%.
In 2015 we went 9-3. Our SOS was 5, and the teams we beat had a combined record of 61-55 for a winning % of 52.6%.
In 2016 we went 8-4. Our SOS was 4, and the teams we beat had a combined record of 56-45 for a winning % of 55.54%.
In 2017 we went 9-4. Our SOS was 27, and the teams we beat has a combined record of 46-67 for a winning % of 40.7%.
As you can see, since 1/9/12 we have played a top 15 (and often top 10) SOS every year and our wins have come against opponents that combine for above or just under a .500 record.
This year, however, our SOS is well outside the top 20 and our wins have come against opponents with an abysmal winning percentage of just over 40%. So while 9 wins may seem like a decent year, when you look closer it can be described as nothing else but a disappointment. I would argue that this season has been the worst season since 2008.

This went about how I expected it would. The silence is deafening.

It's a lost cause. They have their head in the sand.

They'd prefer to believe that Troy was a solid opponent and the loss really isn't that bad.

Good research, UpToPar. And go, Astros! Very interesting facts. I didn’t realize the low winning percentage of the teams we beat. And this year was a down year for the SEC, with the exception of Bama and Georgia. I predicted 10 wins before the season started, and we almost got there. But, 9 wins against the weaker schedule this year really translates to about 7 wins, in my estimation. And that’s really not a good first season. Feel free to disagree.

Tell us how you really feel. No on second thought, tell Mr. Alleva.

The players are bigger men than you rantards.

Totally agree, well stated. I basically said the same thing in a previous post, without the numbers though. I think 3 of the SEC teams we beat don’t even make Bowl games and several fired their coaches. The middle of the road SEC teams simply aren’t up to par as they have been recently. Thus, as your point states, Coach O’s 9 wins aren’t what they appear to be or at least don’t compare to winning 9 games in the recent past years. He was extremely lucky this was the case for this season in the SEC. (I think I just summed up your post and re-summed up my initial post) lol

Due to the strength of schedule next year, fans are getting worried about the program going forward.

As well they should. But don't let that be a built in excuse. As you can see from the OP, it won't be the first time we play a difficult schedule. The question is, do we step up and win 10 games or do we have a 8-4/9-3 Les Miles type of season that ultimately got him fired? I'm hoping for the former but fear the latter.

I agree. It just don't look good going forward.

5 downvotes for posting records, SOS, and winning percentages.
