I’m not saying all that wasn’t a factor, but we were instantly better when Beckwith played even in the same game.

The defense was very much oriented to DL containing and eating some blocks in the middle and LBs cleaning everything else up.

If Chavis’s MLB isn’t getting a ton of tackles there is a serious issue there.

We have the personnel to turn it around, minus 18, 22, 21, 28, 5, & 4.

The issue is coaching. Our LB coach is awful. Clark was jumping into the wrong gap almost every single run play.

You and others that are extremely down on Clark don't know what you're talking about. The idea just became trendy here on this board, so posters keep repeating it.
Are there areas he can improve? Of course. But he showed high-level speed and range vs. UCLA. And in a game that tackling was shoddy, he was a strong tackler.

I've seen this happen with certain players over the years. Danielle Hunter is one. On the flip side, there are players that get "overrated" by posters on this board (e.g., Dworaczyk, Delpit), but somehow or another it became "trendy" so posters repeated it.

The LBs played well at times, but did get taken out of too many plays by UCLA blocking. Some of that, you just have to give credit to UCLA. Major lapses in coverage, though. Thompson-Robinson isn't even that good of a passer, but he had guys running wide open.

By the way, if you go back and look at that TD to Chase Cota early in the 3rd Quarter, Clark was clearly telling Strong to pick him up.
First game for Strong, so not that surprising, but Clark did everything he could do to prevent that.

Is it possible that a lot of our issues defensively can be solved by replacing a single player like we did in 2014?

I think you are looking at 2-4 guys, the LBs are completely out of the game. The Safeties don't want to do anything either.

My thoughts are similar to the safeties: if he can trust the guy next to him to do his job then I think his play would dramatically improve. He flies through hole and makes plays.

IDK if I missed anything but the only time I saw him frick up noticeably was on the long pass which was our DCs fault for having him in man on the outside with no safety help.

Baskerville had some plays where he flashed. Diagnosed the play quickly and shot in for a nice stop. He had 2.5 TFLs (led the team) The deep ball on which he got beat was simply a mis-match created by the playcall. Credit UCLA for that.

The only time you ever saw #18 was when he was getting blocked 7, 8, 9 yards downfield; running to a congested gap while the RB easily bounced outside; or simply chasing a guy down 10, 15, 20 yards down field. He had ZERO TFLs...because he is NEVER in position for one.

Is Baskerville an ALL-SEC LB? Probably not. But it least he has shown the ability to make SOME plays. While not the only one, Clark is the single biggest liability in this defense. Good athlete. Could be a really good defensive player in the right scheme. But after 11 games it is clear to EVERYONE (except, perhaps the LSU coaches) he can't be productive in this defense.
