I wanted to compare each starter and key reserves (mainly DBs)

DLs-
NT- Brockers / Valentine
DE- Benie Logan/ Davon Godcheaux
DE- Montgomery/ Lewis Neal
First DL after- Anthony Johnson/ Greg Gilmore
2nd.. - Ego/ R. Lawerence

LBs-
Buck- Mingo / Key
Mike- Minter/ Beckwith
Rover- Hatcher/ Duke Riley
F - Barrow/ Thompson-or-Divinity

DBs-
CB1 - Tyrann / Tre White
CB2 - Mo Clai / Kevin Toliver
SS - Reid / Adams
FS -Taylor / Jefferson
Nickel- Brooks / Donte
Dime - Simon / Dwayne Thomas

I know they are different defenses, I'm imagining how'd Aranda would line the 2011 team up... but who gets the nod at each position between the two teams??

honestly, i think the 2011 defense was better on all three units.

linebacker is closer. minter wasn't quite the stud he was in 2012 yet. mingo was a down lineman in 2011. he would have been playing the same position as Key in a 3-4.

the 2016 defense is still stacked. i think our 2011 defense would have been even better with aranda as the coordinator, just because he could have been so creative with mathieu (although chavis did use mathieu well).

White will be the nickel if there is a nickel but in our true base, it'll probably be White and KTII at the CBs, with Donte waiting to go in....moving white to nickel if need be

2011 was hard to beat. That was an absurd defense. Several NFL studs on that squad, anchored by Brockers and Tyrann who are both big money guys in the league for their 2nd contract.

right now 2011 certainly gets the nod. It's not very close at this point IMO. That's one of the best defenses in the last decade of college football

Well I haven't seen the 2016 defence play a single down yet so I'm not going to say every single player on the 2011 defence was better.

Pretty sure Brandon Taylor was the other safety with Reid

yes.

simon saw a lot more time than loston. as much as mathieu lined up at nickel or at the line of scrimmage, there wasn't much playing time for loston. brooks was better than him too.

The reason the 2011 defense was so good was the DL. Hell, Mingo wasn't even a full time starter for that group! With the exception of Key, I don't know if anyone on the 2016 DL (at least at this point) could have started in 2011. That was a dominant group that made everyone behind them that much better, including allowing Mathieu to be a superstar.

After 2012, LSU just hasn't reloaded at D-line. IMO, that's been the biggest reason for "sub-par" seasons in 2013, '14, '15. Maybe they are on their way with Coach O and the last couple of recruiting classes, but until the D-line gets better, there is really no comparison to 2011

That 2011 D was brutal. If 2016 comes close, it will be more than expected!

2011... One of the best defenses LSU ever had.

No comparison.

The play making ability and game changing ability of honey badger alone makes 2011 better even if everyone else is the same. What he was able to do, especially for his size, was completely amazing.

Until another one of those types comes through, 2011 will be one of the best LSU has fielded.

I remember heading into the 2011 season with the same question we have this year. All the uncertainty from the blog sites.

The variable that we had that year and we have it this year is true leadership. Mathieu was the leader in 2011 and Fornette is the leader this year. Without leadership there is no path for success.

Y'all can compare every player and every position, but someone has to motivate every player into finding their true greatness. Football is 10% aptitude and 90% attitude.

I disagree. Ried was great. Adams is a lot of hype but overrated.

Hatcher shouldn't have been able to sniff the field for an FCS squad.
