The stats I know used to be on the web site. I have not checked in a few years.

Remember if looking up LSU stats until you get to the 1960's the stats are off somewhat, math it appears to have been lacking back before the 1960's.

I have game stats sheets form the 1950's and they do not add up to the season totals. The season totals always appear to be under the real stats.

That rickety old stadium almost collapsed that night. The stadium was swaying like an earthquake. Largest crowd ever at Tulane stadium- 86,000 +

LSU took an early drive down the field for a 7-0 lead behind the passing of Bert Jones. Then Cholly Mac took the air out of it and we got our asses kicked. (This could be all wrong, but that’s my 52 year old memory)

I was on board for that season. I was in high school and it was very traumatic for me because we lost to Tulane 14-0 on December 1st 1973. I am still hearing about that game. To the people who think we don’t have a natural rival, will say that it will always be Tulane regardless of how seldom we play them.

That right there tells you the sorry state of their program. Their all-time highlight is a regular season game over a half century ago.

Steve Foley. First time Tulane had beaten the Tigers since 1948. It was a huge shock and adding the heart-breaking loss to Alabama the previous week, Christmas that year never got off the ground.

Steve Foley was hurt and didn't play. He had played an excellent game the year before and was tackled a yard short of scoring the tying/winning touchdown as time ran out in a 9-3 game. Terry Looney was the QB for Tulane in '73. .

It's crazy how QBs pre-2000 all had more INTs than TDs. Now a days, QBs in FBS need a 6:1 TD to INT ratio to be considered great. NFL is almost that ratio too. Used to be 2:3 TD to INT ratio.

Much more down field passing, defenses were allowed more contact and blowing up receivers didn't get you kicked out of the game.
Running Backs were primarily used for the running game and only occasionally in the passing game.
Nobody uses the Fullback anymore and goes to 3 Wide out sets.

Maybe it was Miley. Did LSU score first on about a 20 yard post?

Correct, I got the two Tulane games mixed up. At least I didn't say it was Roch Hontas... 52 years is a long time.

20-6 Real Tigers

The final score doesn't tell the whole story. LSU completely dominated that game, after an early blocked punt gave War Eagle a 6-0 lead. LSU was back out in front 14-6 at halftime and held on to the ball like about 25 of the second half's 30 minutes. It was probably the most one-sided 20-6 game in history, and when the fourth quarter started it was pretty much all purple and gold in the stadium.

Frank Racine was the hero of the 1972 Tulane game.

If my memory serves me correctly, LSU played Tulane in 72 and 73 in NOLA. Not sure why.

That is correct. I'm sure it was an economic decision, as Tulane Stadium had a much larger capacity than Tiger Stadium in those days. And if I remember correctly, that LSU/Tulane game in 1973 was the last football game ever played in that stadium, college or pro. It was a hyper-sellout, with total attendance in the stands pushing 87,000.

I was there in 1972-- Tulane was a pretty good team that year and was 6-4 going into that game (5-0 in Tulane Stadium). Not a lot of scoring, but it was a classic. It's amazing how Tulane drove the ball down the field their last possession, only to be thwarted again from victory by Frank Racine's saving tackle of Russell Huber 1 foot from the goalline, on Steve Foley's swing pass.

Neg. Brad Davis scored on a long run when it was already 21-0. And Mike Miley was the QB.
