1960 Sugar Bowl Ole Miss over LSU

Even though Ole Miss beat us 21-0 I thought it was cool watching a Diezel-coached team which I think was Cannon's last game. 30 minute review.

It is interesting that Bill Cannon's run is so famous for the 7-3 win, and Ole Miss got revenge 21-0 in the sugar bowl. Similar to 2011, LSU winning 9-6 and Alabama getting revenge in New Orleans 21-0.

People leave out though that LSU had 3 key players injured for the Sugar Bowl. So they didn’t beat LSU at full strength. Their precious Johnny Vaught even said as much.

Was Taylor on this team or was he gone?
it shows he was gone. Was wondering how that affected the run game for those Tigers.

Taylor was not on that team - he had finished two years earlier.
LSU's run game for most of the season was adequate - they won games (for the most part) on defense, giving up only 39 points in the regular season. Cannon and Robinson were a formidable backfield combo.
There may have been some players out with injury, but it was a lackadaisical effort by the Tigers that day. Cannon had already secretly signed a pro contract with the LA Rams (later voided so he could play for the Houston Oilers) and he seems to have just mailed it in that day.
I attended that game - not a good time that day:

Not similar at all.
The bowl games meant nothing in the standings. LSU won the NC after the last reg season game.

yes and no, both were close low soring regular season games won by LSU, both bowls were 21-0 and the stats were VERY similar....odd...

LSU did not win the National Championship after the 1959 season.
I was at that Sugar Bowl. It was pretty bad. My Dad said that too many of the Tigers had been practicing at banquet tables in the weeks before the game.
Cannon actually spoke at our Little League football banquet during that time. The only thing I remember him saying was that he made that two point conversion in Knoxville.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the stands. I'm the kid with the purple hat made out of some cardboard stuff with a long gold ostrich feather sticking out. That's what they sold for souvenirs back in those days.

I asked my Dad what happened and he said our guys weren't interested in playing - several were going pro and negotiating that particularly Cannon and Ole Miss wanted it more.
Now my Mom would say Ole Miss was just better than us and we were lucky to beat them the first time. She was a Tiger fan but she didn't always wear the glasses. I'm thinking she was closer to right.

The final AP and UPI polls came after the final regular season game. There were no wire service polls after bowl games AT THAT TIME.

I saw the game and unfortunately, it wasn't close.

the NCAA itself counted all those bowl games in teams' and coaches' all-time records in their records book. The bowls were never mere "exhibition" games, despite what some like to say.
You are correct the ap did not count them which seems strange at the very least.

It was a cold, dreary day! I was 12 and had been a LSU fan via radio for a few years. Cowboy Woodruff and Jake Gibbs(future NY Yankee catcher) comes to mind! Depressing loss.....even to a 12 year old!!

Ole Miss was the better team. Cannon’s run was about all we could do against them. Our defense was great, but so was theirs. Rematch revenge is real.

It's kind of crazy that he won the Heisman with less than 600 yards rushing. I understand he did a lot more, but he was still considered the premier running back (HB) in the country by most accounts as I understand.
Just shows how much more defense oriented the game was.

I think your Mom was right. Common opponents show a significant advantage to Ole Miss. LSU lost to Tennessee while Ole Miss beat them 37-7. LSU beat Tulane 14-6 while Ole Miss beat them 53-7. Ole Miss also beat Miss St and Kentucky by larger margins. Overall, Ole Miss outscored opponents 350-21 compared with 164-50 for LSU. Ole Miss just got too conservative in the muddy conditions the first time.

NOLA is a warm weather city but January is a different animal. You can get bone chilling days with wind and moisture in the air. The two coldest Super Bowls ever played were both played in Tulane Stadium, colder than the one played in the Meadowlands in 2014.
