Will there ever be a 25-man limit on recruiting classes again?

If players are able to transfer with immdiate eligibility? I can't see a 25 man limit being reinstated unless players have to wait a year after transferring.
On the other hand, maybe limiting class size will cut down on transfers as schools will only be able to take a handful of transfers. Another potential consequence of reinstating a cap on class size is that the heavy hitters will take fewer HS recruits and lean more on proven transfers, which will push the mid level recruits to smaller schools where they will try and work their way up to bigger schools.

Sign 40 to 50 a year and hope 75 show up to practice in the fall and 50 make it to a bowl game

LSU can sign 30 or more as long as they don’t go over the 85 limit roster.

A team could sign 85 as long as they don't exceed the 85 roster limit.

A 25 player limit may have to be re-instituted to protect all of those kids that hit the portal- many never find a new home.
I am not advocating either way. The players wanted the ability get paid and to go where they want, and for some reason both were granted granted. This is no longer college football, but instead is semi-pro football. I am not certain whether the NCAA should be trying to protect the portal players- but I bet it will be identified as a problem, and a 25-player signing limit might be a partial solution.

Recruit as many as you want as long as you don't exceed the 85 scholarship limit.

You’re looking at it backwards. In order to account for the massive influx of transfers in the portal, the NCAA removed to 25 man limit. Going back to it would not solve the problem. It’s also not an 85 roster limit, it’s 85 scholarships. They can have 200 on the team if they want, as long as they don’t go over 85 scholarships.

I thought there used to be a total roster limit of like 110-120.

I've always thought that the worse affected group in regards to the new(ish) transfer rules are HS recruits.
For the program the portal taketh and giveth.
For the player, with risks, they get many more options- financially and school wise.
For the HS recruit that isn't at the top of everybody's list is reduces options when programs hit the portal and reach their yearly limit and they have to go find another less desirable or walk on.
to give an example... the transfer rules today reduce the chances that a Cushenberry III (last in) get a scholarship at the school they love and then end up blossoming later.

There are presently 1200+ players in the Portal. How many do you think are proven starters that the heavy hitters will be scooping up instead of HS recruits? Not that many. A vast majority of the players in the Portal are there because they are blocked from playing time and are back-ups or not even on a two deep depth chart.
You still have to build through the recruitment of HS players and supplement your roster with additions from the Portal.

There is an overall roster limit for football of 125 of which 85 can be on scholarship.
