Why are kickers maxed out at 3 stars?

Sucks that a team could sign the number 1 kicker in the class and it brings down their average star rating.
Is it that the rating services can’t predict their impact like they can a big OL or DL kid?
It seems like there isn’t a big game that goes by without the kickers playing a major role, so having a top notch one is hugely important. Why not scale them up, say make 2 5 star kickers and a few 4 stars…if they’re worth it in that year.

In theory a 5 star should be a 1st round pick
There ya go

In the NFL? I thought it just meant a top X, 50 or 100, player high school.

Round system is based on projecting pro potential. (The reason there are 32 5-stars in a class, those = projected 1st rounders)
Kickers are considered relatively interchangeable at that level. Even the star college kickers would rarely be drafted that highly.

It does. But, except for the odd one every dozen years or two, kickers are highly valued enough to be 1st round picks. Same goes for blue chip college recruits. They're not highly valued enough to get those high star ratings.

Outside of the top-top guys that is true…and I guess it’s difficult to predict who those top guys will be. I saw a backup NFL kicker kick this weekend and he could shell 60s all day. Not even a starter.

The dumbest thing imaginable about recruiting and it shows that prospects are artificially inflated or knocked down to meet this criteria.

As others have said, star and ranking system is based on NFL projection (which has its own issues considering you can be a really good college player, but not a pro player).
So thats why kickers never get more than 3 stars because you're lucky to see 1-2 kickers rafted per draft (or 1-2 punters). Trying to pick those 1-2 guys each class and give them 4 stars would basically be impossible
Not to mention the recruiting sites put almost no effort into actually evaluating kickers. That's all done at camps like Kohls is a popular one. They arent looking and breaking down tape of kickers and punters, just rank the guys with some good offers as 3 stars and call it basically.

Yea, their star ratings have a bit different meaning…there are 52 5 star 2023 kickers…which I think simply means a reliable D1 starter.
For 247 it seems like the #1 kid Peyton, from Lafayette, would be more than a 3star…but it shows him as the 51st ranked player in the state.
Bonus: video of him kicking this weekend, he’s the 5th tab in this post.

Yes. The rankings are based off of pro potential under the idea that this is a good proxy for impact. The best long snapper to ever play the game is just not going to matter as much as an above average QB.
Though I don't love the system honestly. I understand why, but it's also why 5 star QBs pretty often are very whelming while the 5 star linebackers are basically always absolute freaks like Harold Perkins.

Cade York should’ve been bumped to a 6 star after the Under Armour game
