Let me guess: You were born, have always lived and will always live in/around Baton Rouge.
A sample below of List of city rankings from
Best to worst by "Places Rated Almanac":
12. Atlanta, Ga.
37. Lexington, Ky.
53. Birmingham, Ala.
116. Chattanooga, Tenn.-Ga.
117. Columbia, S.C.
118. Gainesville, Fla.
119. Little Rock-North Little Rock, Ark.
126. Jacksonville, Fla.
169. Huntsville, Ala.
189. Tallahassee, Fla.
193. Mobile, Ala.
195. Montgomery, Ala.
207. Lafayette, La.
219. Savannah, Ga.
225. Athens, Ga.
225. Decatur, Ala.
238. Shreveport-Bossier City, La.
241. Tuscaloosa, Ala.
258. Monroe, La.
268. Baton Rouge, La.
Baton Rouge has great people and many good features, but dude, you need to get out. It is a big world out there. Auburn is awesome! BR is worse in more recent lists due to the traffic volume increase, crime, etc.

Since Hurricane Katrina, Baton Rouge is even worse.

No one on this board loves LSU more than me, but I would live in Auburn, Athens, Lexington, Knoxville, Oxford, and every other SEC town except perhaps Starkeville over BR.

That list is retarded. What is it's methodology? Atlanta sucks pretty bad. Lexington Kentucky is also pretty terrible, but for completely different reasons. Mobile is objectively nicer than Birmingham, I could go on forever, but if you actually look at relative rankings, I think anyone realizes that it's worth nothing.
ThatAUguy: I've stated before, Baton Rouge is a state capital, Auburn is literally nothing but a college town. They each have their advantages, but to say that Auburn has everything that BR has is dumb. If you would like to compare Opelika to Baton Rouge, I would still point out that Baton Rouge is a State Capital and a port city. Those two things could lead to a list a mile long about advantages/disadvantages. I'm not an expert on Opelika, but even just driving through the city you can see the obvious differences. If you would like me to tell you what is better about BR than Opelika, give me a POV from which to analyze it. Football recruit? Student? Grad Student? Full time employee?

Montgomery, Alabama is also a state capitol, but I can't imagine anyone choosing to live there. In fact there is probably more corruption there than anywhere else in Alabama....not a knock on BR.....but just saying that being a state capitol does not always enhance the quality of life.

Point taken, but it does lend itself to unique opportunities for those who are interested in politics and public administration.
As I said, what some view as a strength, others might view as a weakness. It all depends on who is analyzing it.

Baton Rouge does have more oil refineries than Auburn... you've got that and the "state capitol" thing going for you...

But Auburn has such great fresh air........and the environment......have we mentioned the air?
And yes, I have been around. But I guess each person's opinion is colored by their experiences in a give place.

A black high school recruit would probably like Baton Rouge more than Auburn. The same recruit would like Los Angeles or Miami more than Baton Rouge. That is what we are talking about correct?
Btw- that list is pretty crappy. Those rankings differ greatly from someone raising a family, a college student, or a young professional. I know with the rankings you used a place like New Orleans wouldn't be high on the list. But it is still one of the best places in the south for a young single person just out of college.

you gotta give it to us.... we've got some of the fukin cleanest air around

Hidden Flask - I understand your point. However, living right outside of Metairie and 10 minutes from the New Orleans CBD most of my life, I can assure you if Auburn was closer to home for me, I'd be living there in a heartbeat. I went to Auburn, loved it, the town, the "niceness", the whole thing. I've been to Baton Rouge as well. There is nothing more to do in Baton Rouge than there is in Auburn, other than have a few more bars and a Casino that you can't legally get into anyway as a student.
Auburn is basically the same distance from Atlanta, where there is just as much, if not more to do than New Orleans.
But when you're dealing with college towns, and becoming a student, you either like the smaller town "atmosphere" or the bigger city "atmosphere". These new coaches are stressing "family" atmosphere, which has helped our recruiting, because they are really driving that point home in the living rooms. To me, that's appealing to a momma and pappa, as well as a recruit.
Number of bars and restaurants is pretty much the difference in Baton Rouge and Auburn.
Oh, the clean air as well.

the question is why he (and others) like auburn
Probably to play in a wide open offense under Malzahn once he gets his players in there, and yes playing time is definitely key in a recruits choice. I would also say that I think the running backs ben tate and the other one are juniors or seniors and will be leaving.

I really liked the town, I think, just like most SEC towns (Sans Gainesville, Starkville and Fayetteville), it's an awesome place to be, but there are strengths and weaknesses to it.
I totally agree HiddenFlask, thanks for actually being reasonable about this. I've been to Knoxville, Baton Rouge, and Athens this year for away games and have a had a great time in each place. I had a ton of friends from Ole Miss come stay with me this year and I visited them last year. There's been things I've liked and dislike about each place I've been but I had a great time at all of them win or lose. All my friends who have visited me said they were blown away by what Auburn was like vs. what they had always heard.
You're totally right, every place has strengths and weaknesses
