I'm not cool enough to post on the recruiting board, and no one is on there this time of night anyhow.

So what are the cool kids referring to when they say a kid was "processed"?

It means there is a process to recruiting and teams have to and usually do what is best for them, such as: taking a player over another and thus pulling a scholarship. You are a victim of the process.

processed means basically scholarship revoked and removed from the team...typically used when referring to a player who is buried in the depth chart with no hope of seeing the field and is a way of opening up a scholarship for a more promising player...

ETA: in recruiting terms it refers to the shitty practice of changing your mind and revoking the scholarship offered to a player when a better player comes along...

Thanks!

So these schools (apparently this is a Saban thing??) will actually take kids scholarship away before 4 years? That sucks.

It's a throwback to the southern slave trade, unfortunately.

yep...actually, all successful coaches do it...

they often help the kid save face by pre-arranging a transfer to a smaller school and then just let the kid play it off like it was his idea...

A nice way to say one of these things: "you're not as good as we thought" or "we found someone better".

I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

If a scholarship kid does not produce like the coach (Little Nicky/Leslie) anticipated when offering a scholarship, then the kid is told he will not play. Head coaches meet with each player at the end of the season and this is when the head coach will tell a player he is not good enough for division 1 football, kind of "forcing" the player to quit and/or transfer - he is "processed" to make room for more scholarships.

I played and I witnessed it - it is a damn shame and a travesty.

Technically, it's derivative from a common message in numerous philosophy / psychology schools, where experts quip some variation of: "It's not about the destination; it's about the journey." (Read: journey = process).

Saban very publicly preaches this type approach: don't look at results / just focus on the play in front of you / it's all about the process and the results will take care of themselves.

Since Saban also happens to recruit well and has the luxury of being able to turn recruits down... but-- more specifically-- to revoke their scholarships in the middle of their college career to make room for new recruits, some football fans have cleverly associated this arguably not nice tactic as being part of Saban's "process" that he preaches. Hence, players that are cut are "processed".

To be fair, all big time programs do this from time to time. But it does seem that Saban cuts player scholarships more often than most. And it undercuts the perception that he's sincerely concerned about the welfare and development of the kids he recruits.
