If we sign a full class of 32 there are walk ons who have already been awarded scholarships, who will likely not be able to keep them. 52 recruited scholarship players on the roster + 32 signees puts us at 84, not counting 5 walk ons who have previously been awarded or the 3 players (Smith, Strong, and Moore) left in the transfer portal.

Pig Cage probably deserves a scholarship but may not get one because of the numbers.

Walkons generally dont get the 25 man initial counter schollies. They get the vacated scholarships from people who left in already established classes. This is usually done after fall camp and the roster is fairly firm. This is a critical balance for maintaining flexibility for incoming talent and rewarding hard workers trying to earn their way on while still staying under the 85 cap limit.

The sophomore and junior defectors can leave a whole in the program and those scholarships cannot be backcounted for incoming personnel. The only thing you can do with them is award them to people already on the team. However, if you sign 25 every year you have to lose some people as you go to make the 85.
