Whoa....I've never heard this before. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I've never thought that the rating services took grades into account when awarding stars. Can anyone confirm that this is real, or is everyone just speculating?

I didn't know much about him in high school, but I do remember watching some of the spring game leading into the 2018 season, and he seemed like the best receiver on the field. I didn't know whether it was who he was up against or whether he was the real deal, but I was excited seeing that.

Why not? They give stars to imaginary players.

Was the 2 star warranted?

No! He should have been a one star!

I've always heard it was more so them thinking he wouldn't qualify academically more than his play on the field.

Everyone always says this but then there are also the quotes from LSU players who thought he was a walk-on the first day they saw him at practice.

Obviously we know he turned out to be a 5-star talent, and I think academics and eligibility certainly hampered his rating as a prospect - but I don't think it's fair/accurate to say it was all grades. We have seen plenty of guys with grade risks be rated 4 and 5 stars. Perhaps he should have been a high 3 star or low 4 star but I don't think grades were the only thing preventing him from being a top 100 recruit.

His 247sports recruiting profile says he was a 3 star.

247 recruiting profile

A lot of times their ratings are also based on the offer sheet. You look at who offered him and it's obvious that his recruiting rating was based a lot on that as well. (This is mainly in response to the comment saying "I've seen many JUCO bound get 4 stars". Yeah but how many of those had only 1 major power 5 offer?)

Major programs do not rely on recruiting services to hand out offers, so that tells you a lot about how he flew under the radar. He did not have a single out of state offer out of high school. Only reason Louisiana schools new about him was because he lived here.

If I recall correctly, the grades didn't push his star rating down. He was super duper skinny, and a lot of the recruiting scouts felt that he wouldn't fill out much more. There were concerns about whether he would get enough playing time if he couldn't physically stay on the field due to size. What people didn't realize is that he would develop possibly the most lethal release off the line to avoid press coverage that anyone has ever seen in the college game. They also discounted his speed and his fantastic catch radius and reliable hands. Obviously he would be re-evaluated as a high four if not five-star talent. The size comparisons for him at the time, though, were for guys that typically wind up in Sunbelt schools rather than dominating the country in the SEC and winning titles.

You’re right I think.

Just goes to show: if you can ball, they’ll find you. Anywhere. Any grades. Any circumstance. Might just take 3 years but if you can play you can play.

So we are supposed to believe that the recruiting services rate on athletic AND academic ability. Too many 4 and 5 stars have had problems qualifying for me to believe this. Just a poor excuse for an obvious miss.

Not here but it's my understanding he was hurt his senior year and didn't play. He also did not attend any camps so he flew under the radar.

If true, this makes much more sense.
