A great team usually has a solid cast surrounding a few impact players. Impact players move the needle, it’s why a truly great 5 star player like Patrick Peterson or Leonard Fournette are worth more than two or three other blue chips put together.

On average a top ten team will do okay to get one top ten player, if you can get 2 top ten players, that in and of itself puts you above most teams. There are only ten top players, so if you get 2, one top ten team at least is shut out from getting any top ten player.

LSU appears to have strong leads for Surtain, the 4th best player, and Marshall, the 10th best player. LSU also leads for the 30th best player, Kelvin Joseph and has a shot at two more top 30 players, Cook and Rogers. Justin Watkins is a top 75 player some think LSU has the inside track on.

Fat possums walk late. If LSU can add a couple 5 star impact players to this class, it will end up easily being a top 10 class and maybe even better. If the crystal balls are to be believed, LSU has a strong lead for three impact players, two of them top 10. Not too shabby.

Orgeron’s strength has always supposedly been recruiting. If he closes with these three and picks up one or two of Joiner, Beal, Traore, Watkins, Foster or Williams to boot, he will be earning his salary and affirming his ability to recruit.

It also depends on the position they play. Like when you get a top 10 player that is a quarterback. Which we never get.

Very true, players like Drew Brees can be worth as much as four other starters combined. No player can move the needle more than a superstar qb.

All coaches have relative strengths and weaknesses. Orgeron’s strength and where he needs to excel is as a recruiter and motivator.

Justin Rogers is a five star qb. TCU supposedly is the team to beat, but the fat lady hasn’t sung on this yet. It will reflect poorly on Coach O if he lets the best qb in his home state get away. I am not saying he can be flipped, but I know if I was TCU this is one I would sweat to the end. Rogers saw the LSU offense and LSU gameday experience at its best against A&M.

But even without Rogers, this could stil be a very good class.

He proved that last season with a lot of ?’s surrounding the program. This years freshman group is one of the best I’ve seen

Russell Shepard was ranked by Rivals as the best QB that year (#7 player).

Ryan Perriloux was ranked as best QB (16th best player that year).

We do get the highly ranked QBs on occasion... but it not too often we have a true star play the position (Zach was good... and his receivers made him look even better).

It depends on need. Go pay attention to Stanford recruiting and see how it’s done. Per star player signed, their classes usually rank next to Bamas. They don’t sign as many.

Give me 5-5* Offensive (2 Tackles and 3 guards) and 3- 5* Defensive linemen and 4 5* lbs 2-5* DBs (1 corner and 1 Safety) every third class and I’ll win a lot of games as a head coach with only high school volunteer assistant experience from the 70’s.

I could then pick up 3-4 * players at other positions.

And what do they have to show for it?

QB and OL is where LSU has not recruited well.....change that & we're playing for NC's.

are you serious? You’re talking Stanford versus entering any other school. What they do and how consistent they are is like Vandy competing for the SEC Championship regularly. They played in the PAC 12 Championship game last night.
This is Stanford and their admissions requirements. If Little plays last night they could’ve won. 5* Freshman OT.

Are you even remotely implying that Perrilloux was NOT a star player?

RP had 2 starts in his career, and he went a combined 40 for 55 and walked away with an SEC CG MVP trophy (playing with a cut finger).

RP was FULLY a star player.

That doesn’t mean much right now. A lot can happen in the next month to two months.

We need to have patience but have the realization that O and this staff could get burned.

He was a zero star and a four star, too. But towards the end, when it matters most, he was a well respected, and sought after, 4 star - not a three star.
