There’s going to be an abnormal amount of talent in the portal. I predict LSU feasts.

Looking at the portal, there is a lot a talent. Rather than mostly disgruntled or low-level players, or academic casualties, as it has been in the past, there are starters declaring every day.
I won’t be surprised if LSU signs 10-12 portal players.
Looks like Polian is heading this up, as all the transfer prospects tag him in their offers.
He’s a known talent evaluator, and this must be like shopping on Black Friday for him.
Notre Dame rarely used the portal, but LSU has major needs, scholarships and an abnormally deep portal to pick from.
I know LSU fans have gnashed their teeth over the portal, but it will be a net positive for LSU in the long run.

I thought the max teams could sign was 7?

That’s additional spots on top of the 25. Whatever you don’t sign from the original 25 you can sign from the portal.

Theoretically, you could sign as many as you want up to maxing the roster limit of 125.
But you can only give out scholarships that meet the limits of 85 max, 25 per year plus additional to match players who transfer out up to 7.

There will be a lot of portal players who don’t find homes. LSU should seek out Louisiana players that are on the margins and try to get them to walk-on. That would help at least build some depth up, perhaps find a diamond.

Alabama will be plucking the best from the portal like that linebacker from Tennessee that starts for them. Hopefully we can find a few good ones though.

Think about needing a linebacker and you get a serviceable one on dec4.

Bama can convince someone to join up if they know they'll get the start. But as for those who have talent but aren't starting, it's going to be hard for Bama to hold onto them if they are riding the pine.
