re: So many people saying we can’t compete in the NIL era

I believe LSU can compete. I don’t think the problem is LSU not having the money it seems like the problem is a lack of willingness to spend it. Teams like Ole Miss and Ohio State have shown that you can’t just count on big money donors to fully support your NIL program. It takes all fans.

Nobody was getting millions back then. Yeah, the prices have increased but so have the profits. The TV deals alone is crazy money for the SEC schools.

I mean we can compete on the base level. But it’s pretty obvious LSU isn’t getting into the high dollar bidding wars.
Literally today because we lost some qb we signed a 5 star CB and Olineman. Which is better??
The DT the entire fanbase was melting over in the portal. Because we didn’t over spend we got two guys. One who grade on the season was one point less than high dollar and the other that was 5 points lower. We got two for one. Fans HAVE to get over this Hollywood let’s sign the biggest names and spend all our money instead of staying within the market value and finding value like we did in the portal and today. Once this LSU fans will be so happier.

Teams like Ole Miss can’t afford to blow that kind of cash every year. The money just isn’t there in Mississippi. I’m not saying Ole Miss is broke, just that they can’t spend as much as programs like LSU, Bama, Oregon, Texas, etc every year. They can do basically what they did last year and spend big a year or two when they think they have a QB good enough to get them there. I mean, it damn near paid off for them this year. Had they beat us, they are absolutely in the playoffs sitting in a good position.

it was just easier to keep up when you need a few millionaires to kick in 10-20k here and there vs competing with billionaires now that it’s all legitimate

If you have a great OLine, you can get a long way with an average QB. And if you top it off with a good defense, you can win it all. Just look at Georgia the 2 years they won it.

Not really. If you look at the rankings, the teams are staying pretty much exactly where they were pre NIL. I mean, a team or two may have moved up or down a spot or two, but nobody from the bottom shot to the top or vice versa.
You also have to take into account the willingness of these big donors to spend that kind of money on college kids. LSU does seem to at least have donors who are really into football but then you look at a school like UNLV who could probably outspend anyone (or he’ll, the Ivy League schools could damn sure out spend anyone Oregon included) if they had donors who were that into college football. Unfortunately for them, their donors just aren’t that interested in it.
Bottom line. LSU is going to be just fine. We will still average in the top 10 every year and if you are recruiting in the top 10, you can win a championship.
I think the days of “dynasties” is over though. With the portal, teams can’t stock pile highly ranked long term players to have a yearly roster of experienced players on the same team playing together.

I listened to CBK's press conference. He mentioned something very similar to what you "can't just count on big money donors". He had some good and realistic talking points about NIL, competing and winning some of those competitions that signed elsewhere.

think two schools clearly have NIL figured out (Texas and Oregon)

Yeah but with BK we need to be top 3-5 to have a shot at making the playoffs

He was 100% going to LSU until Michigan offered him 12 million guaranteed dollars.

You mean his wife. I doubt Ellison could even tell you what shotgun formation is.

Stop it. This class went from being in the top tier teams to a B- class at best. Losing the best QB in recruiting history along with several other guys flipping makes LSU the biggest loser on ESD. The same SEC teams that are better than us this season are the same ones beating us in recruiting. You cant expect to start being those teams when theyre getting better while we stay average. A 3 loss team next season would be considered a win.

Players were getting bought pre-NIL. It was just 100k behind closed doors instead of a million legally.
So in other words, nothing at all like what is happening now.

He was that rare exception. And he’d probably make $1.5M per year now.
It’s a totally different world now.

Others than Solo T. Who else did lsu flip in the last 2 weeks worth noting? Lost 3 5star guys. Horrendous finish, especially when they lost Underwood first and seemed to have "more money" for the other guys. Now it's a #1 transfer class along with keeping Nuss or this team doesn't make a bowl game next season.
Posted on 12/4/24 at 7:43 pm to reddingoo
And that's not even mentioning how huge of a loss it is to have Stewart go to USC when he's in our backyard. If he's not worth the money we saved from Underwood, who is?

I'm torn. I want some of the players we had committed. However, I look at FSU and Ole Miss and see how much they spent only to not compete in a dominant way. And to give that much to players who can quite possibly be bust or non-productive like all the other divas from the past few years like Dante Moore.
8 and 12 mil is something I don't want to start because it will only get higher and will never come down.
