Maclin has a frame that would carry 240 and still maintain excellent speed.

I think a lot of SEC defenses are looking at faster LB's to counter the popularity of the spread. Unfortunately, there's not enough Maclin type prospects to go around so some will sacrifice size for the same speed.

Chavis will know what to do with Maclin. He'll either make him Al Wilson or make him Leonard Little.

I think Maclin could play Mike or OLB. He has the talent to do both but he could grow to 250 and be hell on wheels as a rush backer. At that size I still think he could drop into coverage.

He's a real talent.

trying not to be racist, but don't let Welter being white make you think he is slow. He has incredible speed for someone his size. He's been clocked in the 4.5 range for 40's multiple times.
He's a lot better than some of you realize.

Don't you think we have enough now? Isn't twelve enough? Why can't we just recruit three more next year and not have to worry about five graduating in four years?

Kelvin Sheppard 6-3 225 srRyan Baker 6-1 220 jr
Kellen Theriot 6-2 220 so
Barkevious Mingo 6-4 220 fr
Kevin Minter 6-1 230 so
Lamin Barrow 6-2 220 fr
Kyle Prater 6-2 215 so
Tahj Jones 6-2 215 fr
Josh Johns 6-1 210 fr
Justin Maclin 6-4 215 fr
Luke Muncie 6-2 215 fr
DJ Welter 6-1 220 fr

would it be somewhat safe to say that if LSU takes two more like Lewis, Nelson or the GA lb, taylor, that Maclin and Mingo could bulk up to 240 or 250 and be situational speedy ends?

Maclin will probably grow into a WDE IMO.

With that said, is Mingo going to grow into a Defensive End?

he'll only put his hand down if it is a pass situation, potentially to rush the passer or to drop in coverage like Tyson did (not sure if Chavis believes in this..the concept itself is pretty dumb although Saban's Ds did it well)

for a big dude, Mingo has some pretty sick athleticism and coverage skills.. I think he'll be a Will

A bird in the hand dude. Attrition, injuries, etc.

Kelvin Sheppard 6-3 225 sr
Ryan Baker 6-1 220 jr I like this kid
Kellen Theriot 6-2 220 so---No comment
Barkevious Mingo 6-4 220 fr Prolly a "project", very inexperienced at football & likely a future WDE---or at least play at times as a pass rusher
Kevin Minter 6-1 230 so gonna be a good one
Lamin Barrow 6-2 220 fr
Kyle Prater 6-2 215 so---No comment
Tahj Jones 6-2 215 fr May not qualify
Josh Johns 6-1 210 fr Prolly a safety--special teams specialist
Justin Maclin 6-4 215 fr Nuffin small about this guy --see Mingo with more experience and a more "chiseled body, either way he's gonna be a beast..... and he hasn't even signed LOI yet
Luke Muncie 6-2 215 fr possible safety, hasn't even signed LOI yet
DJ Welter 6-1 220 fr hasn't even signed LOI yet[i]I like this kid

You don't think it's possible that he's (Mingo) gonna outgrow the LB position and become a full time WDE? ....just asking, 'cause you seem to know your chit!

I think Maclin is much closer to being a DE than Mingo. Mingo is way too skinny right now.

I don't know about ya'll, but I am really excited about the prospect of Chavis coaching our stud recruits into NFL-caliber LBs. Not to take anything away from our most recent LBs. I think most would agree that Bradie James is the best LB we've had since Michael Brooks. However, our next best over the past decade -- Trev Faulk, Ali Highsmith, and Derry Beckwith -- didn't even get drafted. I even liked Jeremy Lawrence and Eric Alexander.

I don't know enough about LSU's depth chart, to know where the need is, but I would guess Chavis moves Maclin to DE.

Miles Fan Now, thank you for the breakdown. I respectfully ask:

Then why did we offer so many LBs in the past when we could have gotten three lbs in the past and not used scholarships?

We, in turn, could have pursued:

Christine Michael instead of nail biting over Seastrunk
or JUCO lbs ready for play.

I have seen Tajh Jones video. It is impressive. But if he can't play, he can't play (to be determined).

Overall, love your opinion on each LB. I still think that we have enough safeties that Muncie and Johns will be the small speedy lb that Chavis looks for. But you are more of an expert than I am.
