One thing that concerns me is that he always scores with the ball in his hand. Never away from the ball
But ive seen Mays in person several times and he has incredible handles and court vision. He's a very savy player that doesnt make too many mistakes. His shot has gotten a lot better over the years as well.

quote:All of this. Just to repeat what I said, Mays is one of those guys who has such good court vision and awareness of where people are that he doesn't necessarily need to be looking at you to get you the ball.

This is how I know you people have no clue about Skylar Mays. We are talking about the guy who tied the LHSAA record for assists in the Top 28 last season. We are talking about a guy whose knock most of his career is he can't score because he is too pass first. Mays has the best court vision I've ever seen in a Louisiana high school basketball player. He dunks and finishes as well with his left as his right and if you've seen him play just once live, you'd know these things. Please, if you have not seen kids play, do not make assumptions.

Well I'm happy to educate. What it means is that he doesn't get many catch and shoot opportunities on the video, he does not show his ability to move away from the ball, etc. Scoring from a standing dribble is a very different skill set than score away from the ball. I have never seen the kid play as I have stated several times, but this is a skill he needs.
Best of luck to the kid by the way. This thread has gotten way off topic and I may be one of the reasons. I hope he becomes a tiger and is all SEC. Best to all.

I think Mays is a 6-8 assist a game type of guy in college if you surround him with a decent shooter or 2.

I and I have seen him play several times.
He's the point guard. He has the ball in his hand all the time and doesn't require an off ball game so far in high school.

Around 30 second mark he extends with left hand on right side (Rondo esque) to finish before defender can leave his feet. Next play he delivers a no look pass (meh, semi look) with his left hand around a defender to the roller followed by two left handed spin moves. You're right though, he uses his right a lot on the left side in this video. Look around the league, college, and HS though and you'll see same type of finishes. Just the way it's being played.

I don't know anything about the kid, and most never said we did. I stated that based on that mix tape very few conclusions could be drawn. As I stated, he may be a great player. However, if you post a mix tape and by inference ask for feedback then don't be surprised on the feedback given on that tape. With that said, playing SEC basketball is a big deal. Being good isn't good enough most of the time. By the way, I would argue Chris Duhon had better court vision without ever seeing this kid lol.
Completely understand and agree Duhon may have had better vision. However, kid averaged 8.1 assists per game in high school last season and is as true of a point guard to come through Baton Rouge (and likely LA) in a very very long time (then comes Javonte Smart so yeah, he'll surpass everyone haha).
Mixtapes will always highlight scoring because well, that's the highlights but he makes everyone around him better. With MWA he happened to be surrounded by top 50 guys who commanded the ball more and he wasn't really running the show. Take a peak at Finley Prep when he has the ball (I'm sure they'll be on TV some), you won't be disappointed.

Will do, thanks!

He just had a lot of shots that he had to put a awkward spin on the ball with his right hand when he could have easily shot a normal lay up with his left. Is just something a young player has to get in a habit of doing. You seem to know basketball so you should know how important fundamentals are. I like his game and think he is underrated tho

I keep seeing Duhons name and just wanted to point out Randy Livingston was the best I have ever seen in high school in that department... Just saying

I could never argue Randy Livingston. Still makes me cringe to think about what might have been. I remember seeing him play in high school too. Can't think of anyone in that era even close.

Yeah, Randy Livingston. WOW. He's doing pretty well these days too over in Australia. The biggest recruit since Randy... his name is Javonte Smart. Go see him at Scotlandville this year.
And the spin of the ball with his right hand isn't a habit but a learned skill. Sky has control of the basketball regardless of how it appears. What he can do with it at 6'4+ and that thick is impressive. Wish he was still in Louisiana to tell yall to go watch.

I'll admit I had no clue about his game. My only point was, IF a weakness was showing up in a highlight video, it's not unreasonable to think it would show up in footage we don't see. My post was about what you can get from a highlight video, not specifically about Mays.
I know you know what you're talking about, so I trust your evaluation on Mays. I also trust Jones when it comes to recruiting. Very excited about the future of the program

Every highlight reel is going to make the player look good. That's what they exist for. To promote the player and build his rep. If a high school player is any good at all you should be able to build a video that makes him look great.
I have seen many players come to LSU with great videos that were busts. You just can't stress enough how different college ball is and how tough SEC games are. Mostly it's because all they need to dominate in high school is athleticism. But when you get to the major college ranks, everyone is tall, fast, quick etc.
That's when you need to develop real skills like a consistent jump shot, basketball iq and good defense.
