Shea : Can LSU land all of Louisiana's Top 10 recruits?

McKinley, Mack still on the board
quote:
And then there were two.
Acadiana defensive lineman Dominick McKinley and John Ehret defensive back Wardell Mack remain the lone Top 10 prospects in Louisiana who are still uncommitted.
McKinley, a five-star prospect and the No. 5 defensive lineman in the country, is ranked as Louisiana’s No. 1 overall prospect. He’s yet to set a decision date, but the rising senior made official visits to Ohio State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas in June.
LSU holds the lead on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, but there’s still work to be done. McKinley is slated to be in Baton Rouge on Friday for the program’s Bayou Splash recruiting event, and the Tigers still have an official visit in their back pocket.
With Mack, the state’s No. 2 overall prospect, a decision is expected ahead of his senior season.
Mack is slated to visit LSU on Friday for the Bayou Splash, and gearing up for a potential Florida visit on Saturday. The NCAA’s dead period ends on Tuesday, but begins again next week. That’s a seven-day window for prospects to visit college campuses, and plenty of schools are fighting to get Mack in for a visit.
LSU hosting the New Orleans four-star this week is key given a decision is expected in August, and like with McKinley, the Tigers still have an official visit weekend to come.
Entering the final week of July, LSU holds the On3 RPM lead, meaning the Tigers are still circled as the team to beat for both prospects.
Has LSU ever landed everyone in Louisiana’s Top 10?
quote:
While the rankings are far from finalized, commitments from Mack and McKinley would give LSU all 10 of Louisiana’s Top 10 recruits on the On3 Industry Rankings.
Has it ever been done before?
In the modern recruiting era, which dates back to 2000, the answer is no. Still, the Tigers have come close.
In 2019, LSU signed 8 of the Top 10 prospects in Louisiana, but both Ishmael Sopsher and Christian Harris left the Bayou State and signed with Alabama.
In 2016, the Tigers signed all but two of Louisiana’s Top 13 prospects. That cycle, Shyheim Carter signed with Alabama, while Klyde Chriss signed with Texas A&M.
The closest LSU came to signing every recruit in Louisiana’s Top 10 came in 2006. That cycle, the lone recruit who left the state was Destrehan’s Chaz Washington. Washington, the No. 10 prospect in Louisiana that cycle, wasn’t offered by the Tigers.
There’s been a number of years when LSU didn’t offer every prospect who finished in Louisiana’s Top 10, but that won’t be the case during the current 2024 cycle.
And after six of Louisiana’s Top 10 recruits signed with out-of-state programs a year ago, it’s clear the Tigers are making a very concerted effort to put the fence back up around the state.
Now, that push could bring with it the first time LSU has swept Louisiana’s Top 10 in the modern recruiting era.

Kelly knows he has to build the wall.
Saban made a lot of friends around the state in coaching circles. With each year, those relationships mean less and less. Hopefully Kelly has that same politician mindset.

Splash is this coming weekend.

It is an interesting juxtaposition that we technically have maybe our best recruiting class within the state (8 of the top 10 already) yet are lower in the rankings than previous years.
We've had top 5 classes after landing only a couple of in-state top 10 players.
Just weird.

I'll put money down this recruiting class in Louisiana is vastly underrated by recruiting services. It may be a "down" year for the cream of the crop but that top 15 probably is still loaded with NFL potential.
If LSU is pushing more national recruiting it means they're not as high on the recruits or they just lost out.

Yeah honestly Louisiana is underevaluated by recruiting services. Makes sense due to it’s not being close to a major media center. Alabama is close to Atlanta even. But Louisiana players more times than not play above their rankings. Top 100 overall players play closer to 5* than 4* - think Jamar Chase, Devin White, Emory Jones and plenty more. Not to mention the three stars who come out of nowhere and become multi year NFL starters - Gage, Chark, Tyrann and the list goes on.

The best receiver in the NFL was a 2* coming out of HS.
I agree, Louisiana boys seem to consistently out perform their ranking.

Particularly the wide receiver position. LSU would be good to just recruit wideouts exclusively from the state. The floor has been DJ Chark and Russell Gage and they are NFL starters. Then every 5 years you get Odell/Jarvis and Jamar/Justin/Terrace.

Chase wasn’t the top WR in his class, Terrace Marshall was ranked high. Folks would do better to keep an eye on the Coaching staff as to who they want on the roster. Things would go so much better.

This.
If there is a Top 10 high 4* or 5* OOS WR who wants to come to LSU, fantastic! Otherwise, I'd stick in-state when it comes to a Top 50+ rated nationally WR. The OOS guys we have signed in the past in that range either fall by the wayside and otherwise take up a spot that could be filled at another position.

If LSU signs the Top 10 players from Louisiana every year, we are a bad arse program. Freak the "stars" and rankings.

It's a warrior mentality that Louisiana players have, equal to, if not greater that any of California, Florida, or Texas players. Maybe it's in part to us being one of the poorest states in America.

I don't think we have signed the top 10 in 20 years

This isn't a down year for Louisiana. Just because the recruiting sites are sleeping on some of our kids doesnt mean our staff is. If there were much better players out there to recruit, we would be recruiting them.
It might seem crazy or wrong to some, but Kelly and his staff have their own big board, and Louisiana has this year supplied not only quality and quantity, but its also spread across all the different positions, save for a few.
Mark my words, by the time final rankings come out, LSU will have 10-12 top 100 players and a top 5 class.
