This has validity....it's not an absolute ....but it does make a difference.
I do the hiring in my department...and I guarantee you, it makes a difference. All other things being equal....the LSU man gets the job ....every time.

A large portion of our graduates are leaving the state anyway. We (as taxpayers) pay for these kids to go to LSU for free and then they leave to take jobs and pay taxes in Texas or Georgia or whereever.

If you are a member of the same fraternity/sorority this may hold true as well, but please stop talking as if there are no opportunities outside Lousy-Ana.
I don't see people fighting to get into this place . Just out of Southeastern states Georgia(once same size as LA. & Florida growth dwarfs it for a reason).
If that's the case Fournette should have gone to USC/UCLA/Cal ,Syracuse, Florida, Georgia, Texas if he was interested in huge business connections.
Get over yourselves.

Saban used to preach that to Louisiana recruits when he was at LSU. He "forgets" to say that to them now.
That was one of his big selling points. He talked about how the kid needed to play in front of his family and community and think about his whole life. He was right, too.
Now, he comes into Louisiana and tells kids to leave the state because it will be better for them. What is Kenny Bell going to do? Luther Davis? Darrington Sentimore? You either make it in the NFL or you have to move.

Exactly. He's acting like Louisiana is this mecca for job opportunities. It's why people from all of the world flock to its Fortune 500 companies.
If you think that's what he's saying, then you're even dumber than you really are.

I do believe it, but it's just an absolutely idiotic reason to not hire someone.
Well in the real world, this is how it is.
Example. My boss is military. He'll give a less experienced guy coming out the military a job before he would a college grad or more experienced worker. I don't agree with it but hey this is how the real world works.
If Landon Collins/Jeremy Hill were to apply for a job with Scotty Moran or one of Ruffin's restaurants. Best bet is that Hill will get that job.
Ruffin wasn't sugar coating it. What he said is 100% true whether anyone likes it or not.

Louisiana is unique in that there is a single flagship U in a serious (top 10 by all measures) college football state - it is also one of the most (easily top 3) provincial states in the US.
Lots of LSU folks are "in charge" business wise and if you spurn LSU for a rival, especially in a high profile way (i.e. national tv), you are much less likely to have a safe landing spot with your General Studies/Kinesiology degree (or less) should you choose to return to the state.
Likewise, those who make a name for themselves athletically at LSU have a leg up on others, particularly in PR/Sales roles simply because people will know of them and are more likely to want to do business with them.

All of these kids at 18 think they are destined for the NFL and stardom. Few of them are thinking about what they will be doing if the dont make it or after their playing days are over

Question: Can you think of any former players who came to LSU from out-of-state, have established careers and made Louisiana their home? They probably married a Louisiana girl too.
Odds say if you leave, you better prepare to be gone and you better like where you're headed. If these kids don't get into the NFL then they better get that degree and look around that state for a job.

The OP is valid if you plan to return to LA to live/work the rest of your life. Bama and probably other big time football schools have booster groups/committees that help former student athletes get jobs after their athletic careers are over. Bama calls it their 1st and ten club I would imagine these groups try to get these kids jobs all over the country, but most likely its in the home state they are located in. So I agree with Ruffin, if these guys want to return to LA it maybe more difficult, but I would imagine someone like Landon Collins or anyone else that has left the state to play football else where probably doesn't plan on returning to LA anyway.

These people & thread are stupid. As if though Joe McKnight couldn't' pursue business opportunities in a richer /better state (California) than 'lousy' Ana.
If the kids were pursuing some business connections 20 years down the road there are far better states than Louisiana or Alabama to get connections.
You are not comprehending what I am saying "stupid". The point is not that they couldn't find business opportunities in other states they play in. It's that a lot of these guys come back home after college realizing they miss it and can't find opportunities as easy here.

Take care of your own before others. It makes a difference. Too bad these kids think they will stay rich forever should they even make it into the league.

That dudes from Cali, he doesn't understand roots. I could have moved to different facilities we have in TX, Tn, Cali but after going there for a few weeks each I ended up back here. I'm content, some aren't and the world rolls on.

What "opportunities" exist in Louisiana that can't be had in any other state?
The opportunity is being a hometown hero, an LSU Tiger. You are not going to be a Gator or Elephant and come back to LA and have things handed to you like you will if you played at LSU. This is an indisputable fact. A kid that leaves better stay gone or he will have to work a lot harder to come back and succeed. Same can be said for other states but LA is a one horse state and the Tigers rule the roost.

You are a poor businessman if you cant grasp this concept.
You are a poor businessman if you cannot see the benefit of hiring Shyone Carey over Landon Collins for a sales job in South Louisiana. Getting in the door is half the battle in sales, and when you can go into an office and tell tales about the LSU program and behind the scene stories, people will open the door and invite you in.
I would not want an appointment with Landon Collins.

why do we resort to threatening kids' livelihoods to try to keep them in state? There's lots of good reasons to go out of state and there's no need to bash people for it.
It is not a threat, it is a fact.
In most cases it will simply be that the LSU player stands out from the crowd as we discussed him on TD and heard his name over the PA in Tiger Stadium, that will give him an advantage. FACT
