re: Rodney Sopsher scholarship debate - what's the RB think?

IMO, if LSU has to pay for Sopsher with TWO scholarships while the "price" at another school is only one, then that tells you where the kid really wants to be. Bama isn't giving Rodney a scholarship. Thus, Ishmael's recruiting should be over since LSU is willing to pay the price. The fact that it isn't over is kind of all you need to know.
That makes no sense. If this "payment" isn't offered by another school and he doesn't go there then its irrelevant. But the fact that you people can say out of one side of your mouth that our program is in a death spiral and then in the other be shocked that Bama has more clout than us right now is funny. And that isn't directed at you, your post is just the one I responded to

I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatched. I would take ish and Rodney then hope to get Jackson next year as well.

Also, since we are considering “doubles”, it is kind of a “double” hit if a “game changer” ends up at our competitor.
That's called the "Double Whammy" when a LA kid goes to Bama...and it is a phenomenon that actually does exist...it's not an urban legend...BTW for all the disbelievers out there...
Thank you for reminding people...who don't believe this is a problem.

I recall the Cam Simms- Cam Robinson ordeal. Seems like Simms was pissed LSU didn't offer and helped steer Robinson(Hootie also) away from LSU. Robinson was an immediate starter for Bama, and in that scenario, you definitely offer both to get the one you really want.

People come to TD because of well thought out responses like this.
Yes, I agree, crappy analysis based on the fact that the #1 DT want's the suspense to continue all the way up to the Final National Signing Day in February...
Sopsher is "playing the world" right now and having fun with it...playing LSU coaches & fans, Bama coaches & fans, and all the recruiting services...

Sopsher has made us look bad either way. how?
Not too often I agree with you Lester Earl...but, I do, this time.

I think you have to do whatever it takes, even if that means taking his brother. The reality in recruiting is if you can hit on 50 percent of the players you sign, you've hit the lottery. Statistics show that more than half of your class is going to bust, so I say take his brother and cross your fingers things work out!

I’m not going to lie, I would give up two scholarships for the top DT in America this year, next year and every year to eternity. I’d do the same thing for the top OT. There are only a few positions where great players can affect every offensive/defensive snap and OT/DT are two of them.

How many threads have been made on this board and the rant about the need for difference makers on the dline? Sopsher has the potential to be that much needed difference maker. If LSU has to take his brother then so be it.

A school like LSU should never even consider that
I am 100% with you and believe that is the case once you are established as a top dog. The fact is, right now LSU is not the top dog. Not being the top dog means you need to overcompensate. That is IMO what is going on here.
Don’t get me wrong, we are a top tier program and are doing extremely well in recruiting. Bottom line, the philosophy in sports has changed in recent years, super teams have been created. You see high caliber professional players taking less money to join/stay on better teams. For us to get there we need some missing pieces. Those pieces need to contribute so the team can be able to compete for championships and wins. Once LSU is able to do that then we can get back to a point of saying “No” to a recruits demands. Bama is the top dog. Unseat them and things will change. They don’t “need” anyone. They aren’t desperate. They can point to their depth chart and say “if you don’t commit it’s not a worry to us. We have depth at those positions and btw those players are 4 and 5 star recruits too.” They don’t need to spend 2 scholarships on one person because of this. At this moment in time, LSU can’t do that. On top of it all, we can’t wait for 3 and 4 star projects to develop cause the players we do have are leaving early as juniors and RS sophomores. The pressure to come in ready and be an impact player is immense and the staff has to have recruits that can do that. You go all in on those players and hope they commit and be that star.

Tiny Rick-I totally agree with most of your post. Bama is without question the Top Dog right now. But at the end of the day, LSU can match Bama man for man with sending players to the league. And that is what the majority of these kids want. Whether he goes to Bama or stay home, 3 years from now he will be in the league. And that's his ultimate goal.
Because if the goal is anything other than that(Championships) he should go to Bama.

How big of a waste would the second one be? Can the brother play at all in the SEC?
Posted on 12/20/18 at 7:39 pm to OppositeMan
If Ish wanted to be here he would sign. He is letting it go until February so he doesn’t get backlash and hoping it gets his brother a scholarship.

This is what I love about the early signing period, it separates the ones who have truly bought in, and those who haven't. If I'm O, I'm moving away from the 'brother strategy' and looking elsewhere. Especially after the 'goodrich' situation. Who knows what that guy couldve been

That is one of many definite possibilities...
I hope not...

First of all, the brother getting a scholarship without Ish is not a possibility Ok. Second, when we move on from Sophser where the frick are we going to move to? Next class is the only place you can find another one.

You have to offer both a scholarship unfortunately. When you are competing against the best program in the country, you need to have as many elite players as possible.
