LSU's freshmen and sophomore classes had 8 of the 11 9.9+ scores last night.
The future is certainly bright if the incoming recruits can compete at a similar level.
Interesting to note Alabama had 10 scores of 9.9 or better, but eight were 9.95. Really??????

Aleah, Tatum and Johnson coming in is extremely strong.
LSU will be better next year, especially when we get Kai back, the incoming freshmen class and getting Dunne on more events

Anyone think that beam has been an issue this year because of gnat’s coaching - I know she is young, so not necessarily knocking her, but just wondering if that could be part of it. Also if you look at the scores...it was that I think that really killed us (bars too, it it was the first rotation and also there is only so much to do on bars, there is definite room for improvement in beam)

Beam is mostly mental IMO. Either you trust your gymnastics or you don't. If you don't, you see checks often.Yesterday was complete nerves and not trusting themselves.
Now with that said, I think LSU should scrap the switch half on beam and aim for clean leap series.

As it has been pretty much all year. No doubt the future is incredibly bright. Next year’s team could have the most talent we have ever had? Am I getting too carried away because that 2017 team..

I don’t think it’s a Gnat issues more than it is/was a mental issue with our girls last night. 2018 and 2019, the two years after Gnat graduated from LSU, she coached our beam team, under DD’s leadership, and they were 3rd and 4th by the end of those seasons behind OU and UCLA in 2018 and those two teams plus florida in 2019. I could be wrong but I believe that was the first time all season Desiderio has ever checked like that in beam.

I was aware of gnat’s involvement when she was a grad - I seem to recall then that in at least one of the years, the beam squad was underperforming and so DD took back some of the control from gnat, and they began performing better. Or that is what was alluded to on this board - with her as a true assistant coach their really is no backstop like that, even if
It is really just a mental thing.
It is really just a mental thing.

I don't think Gnat is necessarily the issue, She is also extremely young and new to the coaching world. I think there will be some adjustments in the neat future.
That said, some of the kids in the beam lineup have been consistent 9.80-9.875 scorers their entire career. They just aren't going to jump and be consistent 9.9 scorers. You kind of know what you have by the end of their sophomore year.
I truly think Campbell and Kiya's chronic injuries really slowed them down this year. Desiderio has been a rock but just didn't have it yesterday. Bryant was a true freshmen on beam though the potential is there.
Alyona and Dunne honestly have much higher upside than some of the kids in the current lineup but don't think we see them as regulars until next season. Too late in the year to make any drastic changes. Alyona may be the only one who gets in on beam this post season.

Honestly, I totally expected bars and beam to be the best two events this year. Early in August we saw Dunne training her old dismount on bars, which looked fine at the time. You also had 5 beam routines returning from last year. When Jay stated in an interview that Bugs would have more say so in routine construction, I totally expected her to take out the obvious deduction elements on beam (mainly leap series and front tucks). No way did I think Bob and ACKT would “out coach” Jay and Bugs on their events.
I also think Jay just simply dropped the ball at times. Haleigh being the biggest one with her bars dismount. And then him keeping the struggling seniors in the lineups too long when Elena, Sierra, and Livvy all could have used that experience.
But I do have to give him props on how well he managed Kiya’s Achilles pain this year. Also sitting Reagan out on senior night sent a much needed message. He kinda pulled a KJ Kindler on that one, and it was about time.

I know it has been discussed how we would rather risk Ryan in the vault lineup than have Sami vault because of her issues piking down the full. But did anyone notice how clean her vault was at SECs? It was laid out the entire way. I’ve seen a video someone took from the side and it was clearly laid out, no pike down. She stuck it cold but you could see that it was just slightly short. That’s really the only reason it didn’t score a 9.95, IMO

If Sami continues to keep that vault laid out (like she did at SECs), I’m fine with her in it. I want Ryan to vault for us eventually but don’t think it will necessarily be a deal breaker if we don’t the rest of this season. The lineup is way too strong top to bottom. We went over a 49.6 without Kiyas best vault
We have to raise our beam and bar scores... beam should be going over 49.400 at a minimum. I feel we are kinda stuck on bars. We don’t have the routines to get to a 49.500. I think vault and floor are strong enough to pick up for bars and beam but we got to try to get another .200 between those two events

Pretty happy with our regionals match up. Facing Kentucky, Utah state and temple/Arizona on the first day. Wonder if jay will rest people on a few events the first day since it’s two meets in two days. I think we can afford to rest Kiya on floor and Haleigh on beam the first day.

I agree. Mentally on the first day Id rather put Alyona in on Beam and Arenas on floor. We know they can hit when it matters. Save Kiya and Haleigh for the AA in the finals on day 2 to keep their legs fresh so they can hit 4/4 and go lights out on their/our most vulnerable events. Also, depending on how her achilles is feeling, we may even want to put Arenas or even Dunne on beam the first day to make sure Kiya can do floor on the second day

I think Arenas will eventually be a great floor worker for us. Just not sure they roll with her on floor this post season but maybe you are right if they decide to rest Kiya night one.
I think Alyona may get a look on beam this post season. Her warm ups at SEC were phenomenal, I’m sure Jay struggled to not put that in the lineup.
The good news is LSU has options on these events. We can be flexible if we need to.
With the criticism of the things Jay has done this year. He did a great job of managing some of the injuries we had, especially Kiya

Agreed. Update, we start on beam day one. That’s either going to be great or horrible for us. If we’re shaky first event out, it could cost us and we’ll be playing catch up the rest of the meet. But if we hit, we get our most nervy event out of the way first and can put all our focus into having normal Floor and Vault rotation before closing on bars where scores may be a bit higher if we hit, and could set us up for a HUGE score if the girls are on. Finals day, if we win, we have olympic order, if we get second, we start on floor and end on beam

Regionals I have my fingers crossed for if we hit we should go through but semifinal on day one of ncaa finals if we go through and the top seeded teams make it will be Alabama Utah Oklahoma lsu with only 2 to final. That is going to be tough. Believe we can do it but going to have to be at the top of our game.

I was looking at RTN, and LSU has had only two 9.95's this season on beam, and both came at home. You have to go all the way to number 40 to find an LSU gymnast ranked nationally (by NQS). I think it's been quite some time since I've seen stats like that.
Would you guys consider the only true beamer LSU has committed in future classes to be Aleah? Do you consider Annie and Lilly a beamer?

Aleah for sure. Honestly she is good enough to anchor LSU's beam lineup next year. Just no switch half or dumb routine construction please...
Annie and Lilly are very good beam workers too actually. LSU has a lot of good options on beam the next couple classes. Key comes down to constructing good routines for them.
Among the returning routines for LSU next year, they need to get rid of the switch half on Kiya and Dunne's routine. I don't think I will ever understand our infatuation with that leap combo. Florida is maximizing their beam scores by doing simple leaps and smart routine construction. LSU needs to make the necessary adjustments here.

Remember her first or second year (I forget) Jay used to talk about Reagan having the potential to be national champion on beam? Haven’t heard him bring that up in awhile.
Dunne is a natural Beamer in addition to Aleah, I could see them being in the 5 and 6 spots next year.

Campbell is great when she hits but she always seemed to have inconsistencies especially with her dismount.
Only senior I expect back next year is Durante, maybe Edwards unless someone surprises me. I just don't think Desiderio and Campbell's bodies are cooperating enough for them to want to come back.
Top 4 beam workers IMO would include Alyona, Dunne, Finnegan, and Kiya.
Bryant is a good beam worker too although I have mixed feelings on her front tuck. Not sure if there is anything easier she could do. Durante is solid but I feel she will max out at a 9.9 always due to the leap series (flat footed and leaps not fully extended). That hasn't changed in 4 years here so I don't think it would really change with another offseason.
I will be interested to see how Tatum and K. Johnson look. Both are very capable as well.
