Maggie was great but I always hated that she landed everything with her feet so far apart. The judges never deducted her for it but they would take that deduction for many other gymnasts. She was judged very favorable but for the most part she was the type of gymnast who made it hard to find small deductions. She didn’t have any of those built in issues we see with almost all other gymnasts, so if she didn’t make a noticeable mistake she was going to score 9.95-10 every time out.

I actually think the built in deductions reflect more on kJ than the gymnasts. The 2 routines they showed for espn her vault was way too close to table to be a 10 and on her bars there was a leg separation, which I know the judges can’t see sometimes, and a very short handstand. It’s nothing on Maggie and more on the judges. To me trinity is better than both Maggie and Kyla. For college anyway.

I like Maggie Nichols and she seems like a really sweet girl but is anyone else tired of hearing about her being the goat and winning all these awards? In my eyes she wasn’t even the best of her class (Kyla gets that). I saw espn’s top 10 gym things of 2020 and her 2 tens they showed for her were not 10’s at all. This will sound very mean but I’m glad her and kyla’s college run is over because I’m tired of the overscoring and constant talk of them.

You aint wrong. Nichols is terrific and one of the best to go through NCAA but she certainly got a lot of gifts over the years being at OU. Judges ignoring landings with her feet so wide and squatting down, missed handstands. and leg separations yet judges continue to throw out 10s just because of her name and the OU leotard.

Ross was easily the best senior of this past class, her execution is superb. My only knock on Ross is she literally does the bare minimum in some of her routines. It became sorta boring to watch after a while.

I have all the respect in the world for Trinity Thomas who actually combines superb execution with difficulty that goes above the minimum. Which makes her much more enjoyable to watch than the other two for me.

I liked Maggie and Kyla becouse we only see them once a yr. We see Trinity 2 or 3 times a yr. I wont to laugh but she is going to hurt us in competitions.

Aleah's surgery went really well and she is recovering right now. She will have plenty of time to heal up with the shut down.

Also with a much better idea of the roster for next year

Vault Options:

Kai Rivers (potential 10.0 vault)
Maddie Rau (10.0 vault)
Olivia Dunne
Elena Arenas (Potential 10.0 vault)
Bailey Ferrer (10.0 Vault)
Haleigh Bryant (10.0 Vault)
Sarah Edwards (10.0 vault)
Kiya Johnson (10.0 vault)
Chase Brock (10.0 vault)
Kamry Ryan (previously trained 1.5)
Alyona Shchennikova (potential 10.0)
Other vaulters- Durante, Nibbs and D'Antonio.

We have a lot more options top to bottom with potential to upgrade many vaults. Olivia has never done more than a full in competition so I am doubtful they upgrade her. They may stick to clean and consistent. Arenas I think they try to bring her to a 1.5 vault. Kai if the ankle is in much better shape is sure bet to do a 10.0 vault unless there are significant issues. Adding a healthy Ryan and Alyona to vault also changes things. Alyona was vaulting really well prior to the season ending. The plan I think is to get a 1.5 out there, she did a double as an elite. Ferrer is expected to be back. I am taking the wait and see approach to her vault right now but the matter is she adds depth. I don't think Nibbs, D'Antonio and Durante will be heavy contributors but will still train to provide some safe space.

Bars Options:

Kiya Johnson
Kai Rivers
Haleigh Bryant
Olivia Dunne
Elena Arenas
Alyona Shchennikova
Sami Durante
Bridget Dean
Caitlin Smith (maybe)
Bailey Ferrer

I think the core of the routines remain the same next year. I think there will be an adjustment to Alyona's routine. LSU and Jay Clark have in the past put out very difficult routines freshmen year before dialing back on difficulty in the future. Kai's bars were very labored this season for whatever reason, I think if she has a full offseason to clean up and into better training shape she can be much better. Dunne I think they do a double layout or full in. Jay historically has not liked using a double tuck in routines as dismounts. I think Dean provides depth but will not be a regular in the lineup. As much as she has improved there are still form stuff. I have a question mark on smith but her and Ferrer seem like Depth at this point. Nice to have depth though.

Beam Options:

Christina Desiderio
Bridget Dean
Sami Durante
Kiya Johnson
Kai Rivers
Alyona Shchennikova
Olivia Dunne
Haleigh bryant
Elena Arenas
Rebecca D'Antonio
Sierra Ballard
Regan Campbell

I think the core remains the same this coming years. but there are spots in the lineup that could be potentially upgraded. I think Olivia Dunne is going to slide towards the back of the lineup on beam. I think Haleigh Bryant takes a spot from a returner but everything else will be the same IMO. Alyona has a lot of potential but sometimes isn't the most consistent. I would love to see what she can do with a full offseason to train. She may surprise a lot of people. Rebecca has improved significantly over the last year. Excellent depth though across the board. For the love of god, please improve the leaps and toe point on this event.

Floor Options:

Kai Rivers
Alyona Shchennikova
Kiya Johnson
Bailey Ferrer
Christina Desiderio
Bridget Dean
Reagan Campbell
Haleigh Bryant
Olivia Dunne
Elena Arenas
Courtney Goodrich
Sarah Edwards
Olivia Gunter

Talk about. what one offseason could do for an event. I think the freshmen play the biggest role here. Bryant, Dunne and Arenas all have a strong shot to make the lineup or contribute. X factor here is Kai Rivers but it all comes down to if she can keep her ankle healthy. Desiderio needs to keep the same routine composition. I am taking the wait and approach again to Ferrer with the year off. Floor has always been Alyona's weakest event, well as an elite anyways but we will see. Coaches have reported she has tremendous upside here and think she could be a big contributor. I. think Dean and Gunter add depth but are not regulars in this lineup. This lineup will have a heavy mix of different tumbling ranging from double layouts, to front double full, front double tuck, 2 1/2 twist. Lets hope the choreography actually improves this year. We need better creativity.

On paper this all looks like a very very different team next year with kids healthy and adding that big time freshmen class. I did not mention Sierra Ballard and Chase Brock a lot, I think they could contribute at some point but not much next year with the depth in front of them. Sierra is a beamer though.

I agree with you. But it’s hard for me to get excited about next year with everything that’s going on. I’m still not over the season coming to an abrupt end. I’m still searching for closure. Maybe if there’s a football season I’ll start to get excited for gymnastics. But right now I don’t wanna get my hopes up only to be disappointed.

Tigerbait, thanks for giving us something to look forward to! It is still sad to think that we should have been in Fort Worth last weekend.

A few questions:
Is Aleah in the class of 2022?
You don’t have Reagan in your beam lineup. Just an oversight I hope!
Do you think Bailey will be as good or better than she was as a freshman? According to her Instagram, she sure is working out a lot.

Thanks!

I know I’m late to this discussion but I feel that this needs to be said. I don’t know who you are or your relationship to Bailey or anything like that. I don’t know where you got your information or who you got it from but unless you have specific permission from her and her family to share this information publicly, I suggest you stop spreading it online. She kept it private and has continued to do so over the course of the last year and it’s honestly a violation of her privacy and HIPAA compliance, especially since she came to college as a minor and signed her NLI as one and is still protected under that contract and other NCAA athletics rules. I get that someone had a question about that and you responded but if Bailey had wanted that information shared, she would’ve released it to the public on Instagram on her own terms. A very close friend of mine is friends with the family and knows the full situation and hasn’t told me details, but told me there’s a lot more to the situation of why Bailey took the year off so please next time don’t answer unless you have the full story to avoid spreading rumors. Thanks

Certainly its wise to use discretion when discussing personal information about anyone, However, HIPPA rules do not apply to individuals making comments, speculative or not. The laws o slander might apply if the comments are false and malicious and damages can be shown.

The HIPPA rules do apply to LSU and anyone who might get information via their position and relationship to the athlete.

I would agree with you that posters on this board should not engage in harmful and ofen false or partially false commentary about LSU athletes and recruits. Tigerbait357 appears to have many contacts in the gymnastics world and often posts very insightful information. Of course with the privelege of inside sources comes the responsibility to exercise discretion and respect for the well being of others.

I would imagine whatever he stated regarding Bailey Ferrer is essentially accurate and I don't think he intended any harm. Sometimes its better to comment as fully as possible as releasing just enough information to spark unfounded rumors can be more harmful.

Your advice is well placed in general and hopefully anyone posting sensitive information will consider its verifiable accuracy, the impact on the individual when the information is released, and your own personal motivation in release of the information. Imagine the athlete being your child and be guided accordingly.

First of all I apologize if what I said offended you or anything. The things I posted about Bailey all have been in the public light within the last year. She has stated openly she has dealt with extreme anxiety and depression over the last year. She also lost a lot of weight (thats not a secret). I did not go into details of what caused the anxiety/depression issues. There is obviously more to the story but that is none of our business. Bailey, her family and the coaches made a decision that was in the best interest in her health.

She did the right thing to take a year off to improve her health and she looks to be doing really well and is back doing things she loves. She has a great support system at LSU. I look forward to seeing her next year.

Let me know if you would like to discuss this more privately.

Just want to let you and everyone else know, Bailey is not leaving the team. As a matter fact she has announced she’s making a very big comeback and it was announced By Bailey, she would return her junior year, prior to this past season beginning. She is now stronger than ever and training at full capacity. Ferrer is coming back and stronger than ever and about 1/2 of athletes on scholarship at one point in their college careers take a year off for personal reasons and come back better than ever and Bailey will be one of them

I don't know much about any individuals on the Gym team, but life changes when you become a public figure.
Do you follow any other sports? We dissect the private lives of football players all of the time. Hell, we will have medical personnel on the TV or radio just to discuss recovery times and potential future impacts.
You may think this is wrong, but it is real life.

I do follow other collegiate sports. But just because it happens doesn’t mean it’s okay. These athletes dedicate and give so much to their sports and for the fans of their own universities to have negative speculations against them when they don’t have the facts is just sad

The players are protected by HIPPA rules as schools cannot discuss specifics, hence the " nicked " comment. Now, often the injured players are open about the injury and allow the school to release information. Tua is a classic example and then the medical anlyses followed for both injuries.

If she can find her way into one of the rotations, I’m here for it...I guess.

Interesting that LSU is ranked #6 in CGN's Way Too Early 2021 Power Rankings.

LSU has the talent to be in the top 4 easily but it comes down to fielding a healthy team, which we have struggled with the last 2-3 years. (Knock on wood) it appears we finally have an incoming freshmen class that isn't coming onto campus rolling up in wheel chairs. They should be ready to compete from day one and contribute a lot. Our #1 recruiting class last year was pretty limited in terms of what they could do outside of Kiya Johnson due to all the injuries.

UCLA losing Ross is a major blow, and Felicia Hano is really quality depth. When you add in the olympics being pushed back. Numerous of their incoming freshmen will likely defer.

I just hope Alyona, Kai and Kiya can get completely healthy from last year’s freshman class. I think the incoming freshman class will be fine health wise.
