Hey TigerFan112. Here’s a really quick high level deduction explanation to help you. I cannot stress HIGH level enough...
The majority of the deductions taken on a routine are the 0.05 variety. You have to look quick and know the form judges are looking for, but examples would be flexed feet, bent knees, loose back in handstands (like your Arkansas example), feet apart, small balance checks (almost hiccups), bent elbows, piked or whipped body positions, and overall sloppy form.
The .1 deductions are easier to find for the casual viewer - small hops or small steps on landings and any of the above deductions that are more egregious. For example, a large arch on a handstand (which ruby often got hit for in the past) that the gymnasts has to work harder to correct, larger balance checks that are accompanied by larger swings or the arm/legs to save the skill.
The larger .2 - .3 deductions are obvious to someone who has never seen gymnastics at all. Large breaks (bend at hips) on beam, large lunge on landings
Also, gymnastics is a double jeopardy sport, meaning, for example, if a gymnast has a large break on her beam serious (let’s pretend she swings her arms and bends at the hips) the judges can deduct for what caused the mistake in the first place - off center/bent arms/bent knees, and then they can take off for any attempt to correct the skill- maybe arm swings and then finally the large break in the skill where the body line bent at the hips. What’s even worse, if the gymnast falls (mandatory .5 deduction) the judges can (and really should) add all the above deductions into the final total including the fall. So that’s often why you see a routine after a fall score in the 9.1 - 9.2 range.
Hope this helps a little. Apologies for any typos... I’m drinking wine and typing on my phone lol

They need to move Kiya down the lineup on bars. I don't care how basic that routine is, that is too clean not to be getting better scores. She even starts from a 10 as well.

Vault is just so rough. Rau is not getting it done. It puts so much pressure on Harrold, Edney and Johnson to basically be perfect.

They are being so tough on Johnson tonight. I know her vault was a bit short but she took the tiniest step forward. It’s almost like they got directions to make sure Hu gets FOTW again.

I think they were a little hard on Rau tonight. I had it more at 9.8, but she’s getting there. Def agree about Johnson’s scores. I had bars at 9.85 and i think 9.875 - 9.9 might have been appropriate for vault. But almighty, Hu’s bar routine up to that dismount was crazy. But also on that note, how do you have all those skills and only have a double tuck dismount? I understand that she gets bonus for the combo (which her pirouette was late so should have been deducted) but she seriously doesn’t have a D grade dismount? Crazy?!?

Eh not really, she has some pretty noticeable form issues outside her erratic landings. She is a perennial 9.70's scorer until she cleans up a lot of things. She is a project at this point that we are forced to throw out there due to lack of depth.
Kiya's routine was too low though. Kai has to go over 9.800 every time, we can't be counting scores below that for her.

I didn't see anything wrong with Campbell's floor. Anyone?

Thanks jpylan1 for the explanation!

Her last pass was a little bit funky, bent knees.
I know they take a deduction on her first pass every time as she usually has a pretty large step out of it. They technically could hit her for cross legs on the twisting form. There were some deductions in there. 9.875 or 9.900 is the correct score range.I am not really outraged by that score at all. I thought Ruby was a little bit better than a 9.825.
Hu's beam score was too high with that wobble.

It’ll be interesting to see what the judges scores are for Rau. We know at least one judge went at least 9.8 or higher. I think the biggest travesty in this meet is Missouri out scored us on vault when we put up 4 10 SV that really had no obvious issues other than bent knees and large but not ridiculous lunges. Still... Helen is a beast. I don’t agree with 9.975 for beam, but it’s still a high score even without home cooking.

They completely snubbed Kiya out of the AA title. They low ball the shite out of her vault and bars.
I will take a 197 but we got to clean up on quite a few things.

Hu got the same score on floor as Harrold where she opened with the same pass as Harrold and she had a big mistake on it. The rest was clean but Harrolds was also clean. No justifying the same score.
I’m seriously convinced their entire job tonight was to give Hu the AA at all costs.

I agree on Kiya, her bars and vault score aren’t accurate. But good news, we did our job, got an away 197 and Utah, bama, Minn, and Denver will all be crying when we jump them in RQS!! Get ready for all the whining on gymnastics social media...

Re Campbell's floor, her second jump in her leap series looked kinda off to me in real time.
And what is up with Edney's leap series? IDK why they decided to change it in her final season and it's such a glaring deduction.

Yes,they saw to it that Helen Hu took the AA. I thought Kiya's vault, bars and floor were worthy of higher scores. It has been difficult when competing at Missouri over the years to get the scores. At least we have the 197.

What were the final all around standings? I thought Kiya won because they showed all of her highlights at the end. What a bummer! She deserved it.

I believe Hu won by .25 of a point which is crazy considering her beam score and then they nail Kiya on those other 2 events.
If this is an off night for Kiya, I will take it. She has to be somewhat fatigued doing AA every weekend and competing more already than she had the last two years combined. I wish we could rest her.

Having watched the Florida home cooking all season and the crap judging everywhere else, I'm beginning to sour on college gymnastics. I enjoy pulling for LSU and watching the ladies perform. I think they are pound for pound elite athletes. But ... having the subjective scoring from meet to meet is absolutely ridiculous. I'm just a novice fan, but my novice eyes can see the sport is not doing the athletes justice.

I agree, she definitely needs to rest.
