I made a previous post about all of the September visits about a month ago, but a few more recruits have scheduled. This seems to be the biggest weekend of the year in recruiting for our basketball program. We have 12 recruits coming to town (that I know of so far). Getting these players in together for a night game in Death Valley is huge.

Coming in for the Arkansas game this weekend:

Derik Queen (5 Star PF - #15 in class of 2024) LINK

Annor Boateng (4 Star SF - #33 in class of 2024) LINK

Rakease Passmore (4 Star SF - #43 in class of 2024) LINK

Nic Codie (4 Star PF - #53 in class of 2024) LINK

Mikey Lewis (4 Star SG - #62 in class of 2024) LINK

Ryan Jones Jr. (4 Star PF - #66 in class of 2024) LINK

Gicarri Harris (4 Star SG - #78 in class of 2024) LINK

Micah Robinson (4 Star SF - #87 class of 2024) LINK

Pharaoh Compton (4 Star PF - #88 in class of 2024) LINK

Chris Cenac (4 Star PF - #76 in class of 2025) LINK

Parker Jefferson ( 4 Star C - #11 in class of 2025) LINK

RJ Livingston (4 Star PG 2026)

I think McMahon is starting to get this thing going on the recruiting front. Hopefully some pieces will start to fall for us and we get some commitments in the next few months. It is also worth noting that we had three recruits in last weekend (Billy Richmond, Vyctorius Miller, and Robert Miller). LSU seems to be a serious contender for all three top-100 recruits for the moment.

5 Star Derik Queen is a bit of a surprise because it seems like LSU hasn't been big in his recruitment, however we are recruiting his 4 star teammate PG Curtis Givens III heavily. (LINK) They both attend Montverde. If we can reel him in I think we have a slight chance to enter into the conversation for Derik Queen also. From what I've seen with LSU recruiting services and other reputable recruiting accounts on X (twitter) it's currently a battle between Memphis and LSU for Curtis Givens III. He visited sometime last month and is taking an official visit to Memphis this weekend.

Hoping our fans show out this weekend and make some good impressions on these recruits!!

As bad as last year's team was, definitely need to give him more time. As long as we do that, I think it will pay off in the end.

Just curious where people stand on this: Would landing a couple of top 100 recruits or one like top 30 recruit change your opinion of McMahon at all?

I like a positive trend, but until they actually play well together it doesn’t mean much.

He’s had a decent squad on paper before and ended up getting smoked in the SEC.

I wonder if people realize he’s landed multiple top 100 recruits the last two cycles

lolwut? Dude has had to cobble together a roster his 1st couple of years while the NCAA hammer hung over head. We're basically just getting to the point where you can legitimately judge him.

He's landed multiple top 100 guys, but if we get more consistent on say top 50 guys, that would be impressive. Still gotta prove it on the court, but it would at least ease the recruiting concerns.

He had a solid first recruiting class at LSU (top 20). Which was pretty remarkable considering he took over the program in April under adverse circumstances. Unfortunately, last season killed ANY momentum he may have had going into the fall and has essentially forced the program to start over from the floor. Even an average season last year would have paid big dividends on the recruiting trail. Solely living off the fact you coached Ja Morant isn't going to cut it now that (1) you have a record at LSU and (2) Morant's "shine" has faded quite a bit in the last year.

I know some don't want to acknowledge it or accept it, but the timeline to "rebuild" a basketball program has been significantly expedited by the transfer rules. "Building" over the course of several recruiting classes is simply not how things are done now. Coaches have to flip their rosters year to year (often 50%+ of the roster is new each year).

I want McMahon to succeed. But if he has another poor season with a nondescript recruiting class it will be time to cut bait and move on. Otherwise LSU will just be spinning their wheels in an effort to attain mediocracy. Is that harsh? Yes. But that is the college basketball landscape we live in. He needs to land 3-4 solid recruits in this cycle.

LSU It's reasonable to suggest no new power-conference coach had to scramble to put together a roster more than Matt McMahon had to scramble after leaving Murray State to replace Will Wade at LSU. It was quite the challenge. But McMahon convinced Adam Miller to exit the transfer portal and return to LSU, got Murray State stars KJ Williams and Justice Hill to follow him to the SEC, and actually assembled a respectable roster. Most are not projecting the Tigers to be a serious threat to make the NCAA Tournament, but it shouldn't be ruled out considering McMahon has coached in three of the past four.

That’s from Palm preseason. He went 2-16 in SEC play.

And EVERYONE who covered college basketball felt that roster should be good enough to finish in the middle of the pack of a good SEC. Multiple outlets felt in the preseason that roster could be potential NCAAT team. It is COMPLETE revisionist history to say the roster was horrible from the start and everyone should have known it. That's not true.

Maybe the roster wasn't as good as hoped in the preseason. But it sure as hell should not have been WORST in the SEC bad. Spin it all you want. McMahon did a terrible job last season. The good news though is that the current state of college basketball allows coaches to drastically change their fortunes over the course of just one season. There have been multiple teams since 2021 go from horrible to really good in just one season with a complete roster change (this roster has 8 new players). So hope remains that this season will be much better than last season
