He will be used in that role plenty but his ability to play in space greatly advantages House in his abilities to show different looks. Him just edge rushing every snap would take away from the advantage he presents schematically

His value on the edge will always be greater than his value playing LB. That's the problem with your math.

Edge is a much more valuable position and presents many more opportunities to make big plays. Whatever alleged schematic value in moving him around almost assuredly isn't worth the loss in value-production by playing him at an inferior position (value-wise) that he plays much less well.

Also, any time spent working on developing at LB will take away from time developing him at edge.

I don't get the EV calculation on this.

Micah Parsons who Perkins is most similar to played middle lb at Penn St and it didn't hurt him

Parson is around 250 now playing Edge in the NFL but I don't if Perkins can get that big

I would argue it did hurt him. PSU's inability to evaluate their talent (or their dinosaur positional valuation) cost him 3 years of development (at the most crucial time) at edge.

I mean just look at his draft position. He didn't go until 12. Clearly PSU's mis-use of him hurt all evaluations of him.

or it could've been because he set out a whole year and they didn't another year of tape

Harbor will be a TE. He wants to run track and bulking up will slow his track speed.

Reed is not a defensive end.

There was a minute where I was like “how many edge rushers are we recruiting?”

And I think Mickens thought that too

SDE
Savion Jones jr

I don't have specific knowledge one way or the other but purely on intuition i would be very surprised if Sav'ion Jones was SDE and not Buck.

I also think there's a damn good chance they could slide Maason Smith to the "SDE" position. He is more of a 3-technique type DT anyway (i.e. plays outside the guard--think aaron donald... a passrush-type DT rather than a run-stuffer) and that's not a whole lot different than what the "SDE" position is asked to do in House's scheme.

Based on the positional designations you're using, I think next year we see:

SDE
Maason Smith
Quency Wiggins

NT
Roy (fingers crossed he's back)
Guillory

DT
Mekhi Wingo
? (someone from the portal?)
(with Maason smith getting some time here, as well)

Buck
Sav'ion Jones
Zavier Carter/Jaxon Howard

ILB
Perkins
Tolan/Penn

I also think next year we will have the ability to move guys around situationally. Bryce Langston and Quency Wiggins are going to be big swing pieces that dictate how we line things up, but on passing downs i could see us going with something like... Maason Smith at "NT", flanked by Wiggins and Langston (if they're good), or Wingo at "NT", flanked by Smith and Wiggins. If Wiggins pans out and we either land a nice transfer DL or see progression from Langston, then there will be a bunch of different DL configurations that will allow us to get a ton of pass-rush juice on the field
