I have noticed a surge in Maryland recruiting in the last couple years. This raises the question of how Maryland recruits compare to Louisiana recruits.
I just did a quick comparison on 4* or better recruits for the years 2012 - 2021.
LA dominated from 2012 - 2019. Often having 1.5 to 2.0 times as many recruits each year as Maryland.
Maryland (2 5* and 14 4*) slightly edged out LA (1 5* & 15 4*) in 2020.
Maryland (15 4*) has moved ahead of LA (1 5* & 9 4*) in 2021.

Do you think this is a trend caused by something like the split or just an aberration?
One alternative explanation is that the recruiting services are just paying more attention to the Maryland area.

Maryland and New Jersey have been above average producers of talent for a long time now. The universities in those states have never been able to keep kids at home though.

Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and more recently Alabama, have been the primary beneficiaries of Rutgers and Maryland being terrible. Not all of those schools focused on both states.

It means our staff knows what they're doing,
Along with Louisiana recruits, they committed to going after Maryland and Cali kids a lot also, Pac 12's south teams having bad recent years and trying our luck in Maryland to stop the kids from freely walking into the Big 10 schools without any competition from the SEC south teams, Just giving these high profile recruits something more to think about than just the Big 10 are Pac 12, and right now, Lsu is a hot team

I’m all for getting equally talented Louisiana talent first.

But you have to keep out of state talent offered to push local talent to commit.

The school Jordan Toles attended (St. Frances) is basically an all-star team that even recruits guys from other states.

I fully agree that Penn State got a ton of recruits from NJ and MD. Michigan did really well with NJ.

That team is nasty, Mater Dei beat them 34-18. But they utterly blew out IMG academy 35-7.
2021-4 4* and 4 3*
2020-1 5* 6 4* and 8 3*

Wonder if that will ever happen in Louisiana. Let me ask JC.

Almost every year Louisisana has great receivers: Terrace Marshall Jr, Kayshon Boutte, Brian Thomas, Chris Hilton, Ja Marr Chase, Trey Palmer, DeVonta Smith, Tyron Johnson, Daylon Charot, Speedy Noil and Malachi Dupre. We almost always have great RB’s like John Emery Jr, TDP, Travis Etienne, Derris Guice, Leonard Fournette and Kevin Faulk. We occasionally have good Quarterbacks like in 2018, 2022 and 2023. We have some good linemen and sometimes we get elite players like Will Campbell, Cam Robinson and Austin Deculus. We get good DB’s biannually like Tre Davious White, Kristian Fulton, Technically Grant Delpit, Todd Harris, Kelvin Joseph, Derek Stingley Jr, Jyaire Brown and JaCoby Matthews. Yes some of these guys were busts. We have the best ratio to NFL player (1:76,837) for a state. DC had 1:54702.

Under Armor has a lot to do with this- the founder is a Maryland grad. They are spreading the money around at all levels of Maryland sports.

I didn’t realize Deculus was born in LA. I also didn’t remember Cassius Marsh was born in LA. Didn’t he commit to us for like a day? Anyway his family is from around Mamou as well IIRC.

The are not enough lineman in Louisiana year after year to be a top tier program. So we have to be engaged all over the country. Big risks as the out of state recruits do change their minds often

Austin Deculus was born and raised in Cypress Texas.

quote:

Deculus wasn't born in Louisiana. But his father was raised in Mamou.

quote:

Deculus told his father: I'm going to put Mamou on the map.

Tony responded, confused: What are you talking about?

The answer didn't come until LSU's roster updated on the school's official website.

Deculus had a new hometown listing: Mamou, Louisiana.

ReDeculous, ain't it?

The ReDeculus story of LSU's right tackle

His dad is 5'6" tall. Redeculus is 6'7".

I live in Maryland and the rumor is that Under Armour is all in for UMD and trying to make them relevant in the Big 10. Rumor is that was the $ales pitch to Rakim Jarrett that caused the last minute switch- come be the face of MD football and that can only help you later in the home state of Under Armour.
