were Matt Mauk and Matt Flynn ever considered "elite" while at school?
Mauk went to play pro ball and then came back to school. Besides Booty, those guys like Mauk and Winkie (sp?) usually do well because they are more mature.
Flynn was a four star and rated as the 16th best QB overall. And lets not forget that RP helped him "bring home that Championship" and he was ranked as the #1 QB.

I have nothing against Oliver, but our coaches know him, his film and measurables.
Yet, they see nothing so impresssive that he doesn't have to work out with these other three guys...
Seems to me there is nothing too promising in this development, and it doesn't suggest to me that Crowton has gotten us beyond the problems that heave been bedeviling our offense.
More of the same...at best.

No offense but I'll believe it on June 7 when and if it happens. I have watched Leppert and Prescott and neither is SEC caliber.

Maybe Burger King could do a scratch off lottery and we could give away two QB scholarships that way...

Why would Burger King do a scratch off lottery

Maybe the coaches are looking beyond the "SEC prototype" QB,, lets face it,, we have one at QB and it is not going too well with him. There are hard to measure intangibles that a player can bring to the table that may not show up in a camp,,,
The ability to make plays may be more important than being 6'5" and running a 4.5 40.
Just sayin..

I appreciate your take on this, but Mauk's age and experience didn't make him "elite"; it made him "mature," correct? Maybe Zack Oliver with a few years of maturation can grow into a great SEC quarterback, yes? All I'm saying is that I think this young man has a tremendous upside and huge potential; regardless, I still don't think "mediocre" is an apt description. And as you said:

but Mr. Perilloux's poor character precluded a stellar college career. To date, I have not heard of any potential character issues surrounding Mr. Oliver; if you have, please correct me. I would hope we're looking for more than simply raw athletic ability . . . especially at the quarterback position.

Older, more mature players are usually better CFP. Look at Chad Lavalis at DT. I doubt Oliver will mature beyond his age or the age of other available quarterbacks by aging four or five extra years while at LSU.

What does that have to do with elite or non elite quarterbacks. Tebow was an elite qb with no character issues. Ryan Mallet was an elite qb with no character issues. Chris Leak was an elite qb with no character issues. Vince Young was an elite qb with no character issues. Matt Staford was an elite qb with no character issues. From what I've heard, our targeted elite qb's in Williams and Bridgewater do not have character issues either.

I'm looking for more than Jarrett Lee v.2.0

I still think LSU needs a elite QB at all costs in this class. I don't think Oliver is that guy. Nothing against him at all and I wouldn't mind LSU getting him AFTER we get a guy higher on our board. You have to wonder why LSU hasn't offered a guy in their backyard and neither has any other major programs. Secondly, its obvious LSU has guys higher on their board for obvious reasons.
I don't see why its so hard for us to get a great QB recruit considering how badly we need one. They could essentially be warming the bench for one year then starting if they're good enough.
So, the PT promise could be there if they work hard...

Ya'll are talking as if these "elite" QB's grow on trees and that LSU is in some way at fault for not landing one.
8 times out of 10, An elite QB from Texas is going to go to Texas. One from Florida is going to go to Florida. And one from Louisiana is going to go to LSU. It's not Les Miles' or anyone else's fault at LSU that Louisiana hasn't had an elite QB since Ryan Perrilloux. Until then, we've got to do the best we can, which may be Zach Oliver. It's not like LSU isn't trying to recruit Bridgewater, etc.

So you don't want the coaching staff to show due dilligence and take every opportunity to evaluate which of these quarterbacks has the best shot to be groomed successfully over the next 4 to 5 years?
Would you prefer that we go all-in for two high profile out of staters only to get burned come February?

I just dont see what is wrong with taking a look at these guys and making an offer and what is wrong with the kid out of texas I am pretty sure he is highly rated

I'm excited for ZL...if he makes it to campus. If he makes it to campus, I'd be more inclined to only taking one QB this class and I wouldn't mind a offer to someone like Oliver.

In my opinion a lot of people are under estimating Dak Prescott. I am not saying he should be offered, but he is definitely worthy of a look, as I am sure these other guys are. Dak is a very good QB who will end up with a good offer list before it is said and done. Big, strong, accurate, and can even move a little. Best part is, these aren't his best quality, that would be character and leadership. Just my two cents.

Burch reminds me a lot of Prescott

Tryouts are illegal in division 1 by the way.
