Have you seen Bama’s Kickers the past few years.... I think we can still use scholarships for special teams players and be fine. Rather not have games decided by missed special team plays.

why preferred walk-ons don't count against the limit? Is it because they either have no academic scholarship or what?

A. Because they're walkons and are not on athletic scholarship.

B. He can be on academic scholarship. If he was a recruited athlete you don't have to count him until he plays in a game. So if he doesn't play at all his first year, he wouldn't count against the 25 initial counter limit (this is different from the 25 signee limit which he wouldn't ever count against. Confusing, I know, and it's almost a distinction without merit). In addition, after a year and he maintains a 3.0+ gpa, you wouldn't have to count him against the 85 either when he plays.

Awesome. How many PWOs can we take each year? Seems like we can get a lot of special teams guys/tweeners that way. I mean we even got a couple 3 stars like the kid from UHigh to walk on last year.

hell yeah. that hawthorne kid has a 32 ACT and a 4.0. He'd probably qualify for a full academic ride at LSU.

Yeah, according to his coach that's the plan for him. They told him he's absolutely good enough to be a scholarship guy, but he simply doesn't need it with his grades. If I heard him correctly, I think his coach said he has a few scholarship offers to other schools, but said this kid and his family have been Tigers from birth so it was never a question of where he was going once LSU threw their hat in the ring. His coach also said they've had calls every week about him or Peyton Todd from just about everyone in the SEC/Big12/ACC.

I'm glad to see LSU going this way for some of the specialists. I think that it was Aranda that made the comment "there's more specialists on scholarship here than linebackers on scholarship" upon his arrival at LSU.
