Opposing coaches will use the BR crime rate against LSU, especially now after Wayde Sims

Coaches will use anything, and have used A&M hoops coach Billy Kennedy’s Parkinsons against him.

The BR crime rate is horrible and I’m not sure if any other SEC school is even in the ballpark (I have not researched this, so I could be wrong).

The death of Wayde Sims gives them a vivid example to point to.

LSU just lost basketball recruit Omar Payne to Florida. He was supposed to visit LSU last weekend but his visit was canceled after Wayde was killed. He chose not to reschedule and committed to the Gators.

This affects the recruiting of regular students too. You can read the LSU parents page on Facebook and many of the posts are about crime. They often say other schools they were considering pointed out the crime in Baton Rouge.

LSU has a lot of clout in BR. They need to use that clout to help solve this issue.

And ban LSU athletes from Southern.

the crime is a legit problem but Payne was not likely going anywhere but Florida any way.

I mean you’re not wrong, they probably will.

But at the same time, it’s not like he got shot on LSU’s campus minding his own business.

Correct, but the full story won’t always get told.

BR is like any other city. If you go out looking for trouble you will find it. Sims was at the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong people, doing the wrong things. I understand parents being worried, but if you trust your kid will keep his head straight then there is nothing to worry about.

I agree. I went to LSU and have sent my kids there, without reservation.

Others are not so familiar.

BR residents should be embarrassed of what this city has become & it will definitely be used

I'm hoping for a miracle & someone can come along soon & create some change here.

Omar Payne and his family understood the situation. It was not negative recruiting. Florida told him he had to give them a answer or he wasn’t going to have a spot so he decided to stay close to home. I know teams will use the crime in Baton Rouge against us but this recruit in basketball had nothing to do with that.

They have already been using that before this even occurred. Our crime rate is a real problem. I remember a football recruit last year eliminated us because his mom didn't like the high crime in BR.

Some of these inner city kids are reared in places a lot worse than BR will ever be. Death is a concern their entire growing years.

From a very quick Google search

quote:

Within Alabama, more than 82% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Tuscaloosa. Importantly, when you compare Tuscaloosa to other communities of similar population, then Tuscaloosa crime rate (violent and property crimes combined) is quite a bit higher than average.

Not sure how it compares to BR...but feel free to let us know.

There are bad areas in every city.

If you hang out in those areas long enough, you will eventually be either a victim or a witness.

I’m sure it will work too, imagine how the kids from inner city New Orleans would react to going to school in a city with violent crime

Sure they'll use it. But the reality is that it's not as if many of these kids are coming from Mayberry. For instance, Waters is from Hartford, CT (ranked right next to BR in murders per capita). LSU just got a commitment from a kid from Baltimore. BR is no different from any other large, diverse city. There are bad areas of the city which pose a risk to anyone who hangs out there.

If anything, this is a wake up call to the rest of the players to cherish the opportunity presented to them and avoid losing it all simply because of a fight. Wade can turn it into a positive in living rooms by saying "This event has devastated me and I NEVER want to get that call again. So if your son comes here, I promise you there won't be a coaching staff in America that will work harder to keep them out of trouble. Unfortunately, I have a clear example to show them the consequences of being in the wrong place."
