Not accurate according to this:

I'm looking at PFF which tracks every snap where someone plays. In 2018 and 2019 he played "slot corner" by far the most, which is NB. Technically that's considered a "safety" spot but not in the sense of SS/FS. People call the NB spot "Safety-nickel" a lot.

He did have some snaps as an actual safety but way way more at NB and then last 2 years CB. So technically yes he played some safety but he wasn't a starter there. He started at NB and CB the last 4 years.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. We are not in the position to be nitpicking like that, especially if the player has the experience we’re looking for to bridge this gap. You do not have time to “sit and wait” and CBK and his staff have shown zero signs of doing that.

I mean, it’s not completely absurd to say that we do really need some young CB’s on the roster.
It is completely absurd to pass on a guy like this because of that need, though. They aren’t mutually exclusive.
Any hype for Welch seems to have died completely. Thought he was our next stud corner. We supposedly didn't mind so much if the other recruit never landed as long as we still had Welch.
Am I missing something?

I think Welch is LSU's next All-SEC corner. But penciling in a true freshman coming off a major injury as a day one starter in this league is a little over the top.

2 major injuries

While it would be great for Welch to be a day 1 dominant starter ala Stingley or Ricks did coming in. You cant expect that given his recent past.

This NIL stuff is getting ridiculous.

Can’t wait until we sign Joe Doe-Nike next year.

PFF grades for Bernard-Converse:
2021 - 75.8 (CB)
2020 - 76.0 (CB)
2019 - 66.2 (NB)
2018 - 70.6 (NB)

For frame of reference McGlothern was a 69.3 this season. Mekhi Garner from ULL was a 76.1 this past season (and 76.3 the year before that).

I would argue that it was always a little short-sighted to be fine with one corner in this class. But the real game changer was the attrition. We knew we would lose Stingley this year, and we knew we would most likely lost Ricks next year. We (at least I) did not expect to lose Flott, McGlothern, and (if you believe rumors) Raydar.

So then our returning scholarship corners for 2022 turn into:
- Jay Ward (SR, 2 yrs remaining, currently listed as a safety)
- Raydarious Jones (RS-SO, 3 yrs remaining, supposedly at risk to transfer)
- Damarious McGhee (SO, 3 yrs remaining)

... and that's it.

Now add our incoming class including transfers:
- Mekhi Garner (RS-SR, 2 yrs remaining)
- Greg Brooks Jr. (SR, 2 yrs remaining)
- Laterrance Welch (FR, 4 yrs remaining)

If everyone stays and exhausts their eligibility (unlikely), the roster looks like this over the next couple of years. Guys who I think are at notable risk to not actually be on these rosters are in bold.

2022
- Garner (RS-SR)
- Ward (SR)
- Brooks (SR)
- Jones (RS-SO)
- McGhee (SO)
- Welch (FR)

2023
- Garner (RS-SR+)
- Ward (SR+)
- Brooks (SR+)
- Jones (RS-JR)

- McGee (JR)
- Welch (SO)
- 2023 HS Class (FR)

2024
- Jones (RS-SR)
- McGhee (SR)

- Welch (JR)
- 2023 HS Class (SO)
- 2024 HS Class (FR)

So basically there's legitimate reason to be pretty concerned about our CB depth in 2023 at this point. Garner would be in year 6 while Ward, Brooks, and Jones would all be in year 5. It seems that if any of those guys can go pro after the 2022 season, there's a good chance that they will. If Jones does indeed leave it makes the situation look much worse.

I don't think you can bank on getting another 5-star freak athlete like Ricks/Stingley who can step in and start day 1. If we do, great! But those guys don't come around every day. That means we will probably be looking for CB's in the portal again next year unless we can find some additional depth with 3+ years of eligibility now.

You forgot to include Jordan Allen in this. He will also play corner back with Welch.
