Oops. Sorry, guys. I thought this was the Malik Newman thread.
You got any news to report? No? I think a slight hijack never hurt anything. When you're dealing with a quiet recruit (which is surprising this day and age), there's going to be a LOT of dead time
If it makes you feel any better, we are a week away from his potential announcement. There's your Malik news

Let's set some things straight in here...
1) TQ was committed before McCray.
2) Atlanta Celtics may be the biggest AAU power but that doesn't put them anywhere near the top of the landscape in summer teams. AAU is 3rd or 4th tier these days behind camps, EYBL, UA, Adidas, Reebok type circuits. Celtics are not great at all anymore.
3) McCray's dad is still much more well respected than he is since he started the program. McCray does however design nice workouts (although that skill may be diminishing).
4) LSU has as good a shot at players out of Georgia (and likely better) than Moo State even with them having McCray (see Patterson, TQ and some players LSU is recruiting for 2016 and beyond).
Long story short... the hire is a reach. McCray isn't near as valuable of an asset as it was once assumed. It's why he is routinely out of work when it comes to the college ranks.

Sometimes people start measuring peckers and forget what the thread is about.

CoachD-I really don't care what power McCray has, as I said, this is a Newman thread, end of discussion.
And Tom Izzo has proven you DON'T have to have a team of McDonalds All Americans to be a power basketball program. Howland has skins on the wall that will attract BETTER players than normal. Izzo has beaten teams with 5-6 All Americans to his maybe one. Anyway, let's get Malik Newman and all this is moot.

Come on man... Tom Izzo is a Top 5 Coach. Maybe the best with the X's and O's in college basketball. Howland is solid but not great.
And Malik, well... still plenty of time before he makes his mind up. I figure we got LSU people talking basketball after basketball season... let's keep it up as long as it is LSU related. The Malik news will get a new thread if something big drops. We all know that.

Didn't you bring it up?

104.5 floating the idea of Rick Ray taking Musselman's spot on staff to further help with Newman
Posted on 3/25/15 at 11:39 am to massiveattack
I'd actually be down with that. He was a good assistant coach, just a poor head coach. Can recruit and has a wealth of experience in the SEC. If they can make it happen, I say go for it. I wouldn't mind seeing if Robert Kirby wants to come back either.

I think he would be a home run as well

Why I didn't think about this, that would be a great move.

I think Newman would like that. He seemed to be comfortable with both coaches.

Got a little fire in him as well.

Didn't Malik's dad not like Ray? I don't know thought I heard something. But I always liked Ray. I think people don't understand how hard it is to recruit at MSU if you have a couple of down years

He didn't think he was right for Mississippi State. I think it was a basketball thing and not a personal thing. I know Malik likes Ray a lot though.
