NEW 2018 Basketball Recruiting Thread

With the four (now 5) studs signed and delivered and three (now 2) scholarships remaining, Will Wade and Co essentially have a completely new class to sign for the 2018-2019 season.
Here's what we know...
Signed Recruits
5* Nazreon Reid - F/C
5* Emmitt Williams - F
4* Ja'Vonte Smart - CG
4* Darius Days - F
JUCO Marlon Taylor - Wing
With three (now 2) scholarships remaining, its been reported by Worsham/Embody and others than Wade likely wants a transfer wing who will have to sit. I think now with the departure of Sampson that could shift to an eligible-immediately wing (Marlon Taylor) and/or a 2018 wing recruit. It would make most sense if we signed a guy who had to sit that it be a big similar to Bigby-Williams, since we will lose him and likely Naz after next year.
Let's take a look at who we have been looking at for the last three spots - much credit to Billy Embody and Cody Worsham
Class of 2018 Recruits
3* #164 - Emmitt Mathews - 6'6 SF
- former UCONN commit, Greg Heiar is all over him
- possible visit in the works
247
Transfers Who Must Sit
Don Coleman - Cal - sit one, play one - 6'2 CG
- 14.2ppg last year as a volume shooter, 33% from the field and 24% from 3
- possible April 19 visit
- also plans to visit USA, Ole Miss, and Ga Southern
- COMMITTED TO USA
Worsham Story
Brandon Cyrus - DePaul - sit one, play two - 6'5 Wing
- 7.2ppg and 3.5rpg last year
Worsham Story
James Banks III - Texas - sit one, play two - 6'10 C
- 1.7ppg and 2.4rpg in about 12min/game freshman season (2016-2017)
- Only played in 14 games this past season averaging about 7mpg
ESPN Profile
Transfers Immediately Eligible
Javan White - Oral Robers - two years left - 6'9 PF
- 10.2 ppg and 9rpg
- visited April 28th weekend
ESPN Profile
Marlon Taylor - Panola College - JUCO - 6'6 wing **SIGNED**
- visited April 20, "loved" it
- 16.4ppg and 9.6rpg shooting 50% from the field
- Panola coach says he's "the best athlete in the country, bottom line", but still raw
247
As more info trickles in I'll continue to update

Thanks for the update. It still blows my mind that all this is shaping up for LSU. Good days are ahead fellas

Rachal is a bit of a swing player in all of this. He was by far LSU's best defender last year. Presumably, he could be a lock-down wing defender. The downside is that he's not a good shooter, so you lose the 3 point threat (albeit inconsistent) that Sampson brought to the table. However, offense was never LSU's problem last season and you would think they could be nearly as good this season (though in a different manner).
We know Waters and Edwards can shoot it from 3. Mays has his moments. Days looks like he can shoot it, and we know Reid wants to shoot his share. Thus, does LSU absolutely HAVE to have another 3 point shooter or wing defender? Or, can Rachal fill the defensive role?
Clearly LSU is looking for another wing, but while you would love to have him, I don't know if the loss of Sampson puts LSU in dire straits. Arguably your rotation is complete and there is a lot of versatility there:
Waters
Smart
Mays
Edwards
Rachal
Days
Simms
Williams
Reid
Bigby-Williams
Now, LSU can hope to add one more piece for next year, while really focusing on making sure you continue to keep the program on an upward trajectory in year 3 once some of your key talent leaves.

Thanks for the info. According to Matthews profile everyone has cooled off on him. There's several factors for this and I don't want to speculate, so I don't know if he will be eligible to play next season. But, LSU def needs a big wing/sf type in this class, esp with Sampson's departure. Marlon Taylors name came up not long ago, but haven't heard anything lately. Don't know if LSU backed off or he did. But he would fit perfect with this class. But who knows, Wade may pull one out the air like last year with Tremont. I had not even heard the name Tremont Waters until he signed with LSU. I know there's still a few in the top 100 that were interested in LSU but committed elsewhere. Obviously any who have signed elsewhere are off limits (unless something drastic happens) but a commit is still fair game. What about that big from, I don't remember his name or school, he's a transfer and was mentioned on the rant a couple days ago. Kid can run the floor, pass, good low-post footwork. Anyway, thanks again.

New thread, woooo!!!
Not 2018 but...
Per Worsham on Twitter: LSU seeing two five-stars in person today:
- 2019 Trendon Watford (per @AdamZagoria)
- 2020 Greg Brown (per @Ani_Umana)

Supposedly they're off of Brandon Cyrus.
Also supposedly, they're recruiting - but haven't offered - a 6-9, 205-pound post from Triton College in Illinois named Courtese Cooper, who is a JUCO freshman with three years of eligibility left and who averaged 10 and 7, with 2.9 blocks, last year.
Ditto - recruiting but haven't offered - 6-5, 200-pound wing Dexter Dennis from Believe Prep Academy in Tennessee, who is originally from Baton Rouge and who graduated from Baker High School last year.
And the word is they had a 5-10 point guard from UAB named Nick Norton in for a visit. He averaged 7.5 points and 4.9 assists last year, and he's a grad transfer.

Yeah, apparently he signed an LOI with them, so never mind on him. Last week we were apparently thinking about getting involved, but didn't do it.
It's starting to sound like LSU has a real chance at the Matthews kid.

Also, you might want to put James Banks, the 6-10, 250-pound post player from Texas, on the recruiting list. Benford was in Austin to see him today.
Banks averages like 1.7 and 2.3 for his first two years at UT. He never plays. Supposedly he's physical and he'll definitely rebound, though.
He'd sit out and then have two years to play.
High school highlight tape

The modern bb game has changed. Instead of relying on a center-based post game, most winning teams now rely more on passing the ball more to find an open player to shoot a trey. So Wade might need to find recruits who can shoot the 3s well, >40% in 3-point shots in order to go a long way in the tourneys.

Banks looks like he has potential in that video. He moves pretty well.

Banks is not 250 lbs. in that video. Maybe 220. Hopefully he didn't add a bunch of bad weight in college.

Not fully LSU related, but Antwann Jones, who was Emmitt Williams' HS teammate that we recruited but signed with Texas A&M was released from his NLI, visited Memphis and signed with them. Very weird for the Aggies, who now only have JuCo Wendell Mitchell in their class, to release him.
Always thought he would be a good target to slide in at SF, even moreso now with Sampson gone

I never watched his highlights or anything but he definitely fits the mold as a sf. 6’6 200lbs. Would have been a nice get

Banks would be a good get. Never can have enough post players. Also looks like he was on the same HS team as Cyrus.

Looks like we’ve jumped in the mix for Marlon Taylor, a JUCO wing who’s been mentioned quite a bit on here before. 6’6 200, averaged 15.2 PPG and I think 10 RPG, shot 43% from deep and apparently has a 50” vertical.

Yea, I've mentioned him a few times but could never get any confirmation that LSU was seriously interested. The guy can get up and get there quick. He reminds me of Vernell Singleton (for us old dudes who remember that far back) but a better ball handler than Vernell. I thought he'd be a good addition to this class, but Wade may have his eyes on an even better fit.

Marlon Taylor would be ideal for this team with his athleticism and shooting ability, assuming he buys in on the defensive end.
