So to even be an effective pass rushing DE Mingo would first have to gain 40 lbs.

LSU doesn't exactly develop pass rushing DEs properly

quote:

And thats the minimum he would have to gain to even see the field on pass rushing situations.

george selvie is like 235

demarcus ware prolly played at 240 at troy

quote:

Ryan Baker on the other hand is 213 and our bigger LB are at 240.

dude, please stop bringing up what LSU players weigh

our guys are too big. prolly about 5-10%, depending on the person

mingo needs to get to about 235 and rush the passer

I hope that my bro-in-law whose wife teaches at Barbe doesn't know what he's talking about, but the word after the game the other night is that Mingo was considering Bama.

NO!!!!!!! MINGO IS ALL LSU!!!!!!!!!!

He tells me he expects to play OLB in college. He says he wouldnt mind moving to DE but he feels more comfortable from a standup OLB position.

I remember this time last year when Bama supposedly would sign 3-4 LSU players. All the rumors all the worry, for nothing. They could very well end up there but LSU is still the team to beat until they commit. That being said Mingo has reportedly been to nearly every single LSU game at home this year per Sonny Shipp. fwiw.

As for the DE vs LB argument, its just my opinion that he stays at LB. I could be wrong, so you could you. First we sign the kid, then we will see where he ends up.

That may be a little on the low side to be fair at 6'6". If the guy was built like Corey Moore, I would understand. But considering his lack of leverage, I don't think he would have the power to take on OT's at 235... maybe as a rush OLB, but I don't see it from the DE position. Hell, Rahim Alem is shorter than Mingo and is just as fast and it's only been in the last two years when he added bulk that he became a really effective pass rusher (and he's what... a good 3 inches shorter?).

his bulk had nothing to do with his effectiveness

al jones not overruning every other play and literally whiffing on the QB made him more effective as a pass rusher

Well, of course that had something to do with it, but I just don't see it with Mingo.

The thing (ETA: everyone) is forgetting is we have a commit from Michael Brockers who has a very similar frame to Mingo except he's 255. He's still pretty damn lean and will be expected to add weight (granted he'll likely play SDE).

I just think 235 is on the very slight side for someone that tall... yeah, the Demarcus Ware argument could hold true, but is Ware 6'6"? He's like 6'4" right? And to be honest with you I'm not convinced that Ware would have been an effective pass rusher game-in and game-out in the SEC at that weight.

Yeah, I honestly think he has the build to contribute next season... it'll depend on how Clement and Edwards progress as to whether he'll be needed or not. Having Alem, Levingston, Corley, and Aghayere may allow us to redshirt Brockers though.

He's not the most explosive guy, but he's a real book-end sort of DE and is a hell of a run stopper... and he already knows how to keep contain on off tackle runs as a high school senior which is a plus.

I agree with you Stagg. I think everyone see's Mingo's height and automatically assumes he's a DE. But his weight is nowhere close to DE range. So he's too tall at LB and too light at DE. You could argue that nothing can be done about his height but something could be done about his weight. OR, you could just let him play the position that has brought him the National Spotlight and further develop him there. Especially at a position of need.

No he is not! I saw Al Jones come to West Monroe and scrimmage when his senior year at St Aug. He was quick, but not nearly as explosive and his 1st step is not close to Mingo's. Sorry.

The thing that nobody talks about when it comes to Mingo is his loose hips and his ability to change direction and how fluid he is as a athlete.

not sure he'll ever be big enough to line up over a Tackle

I think he's an OLB with the speed and athleticism he possesses

Dye and Montgomery are the pass-rushing DEs we are trying to lure
