Might be an unpopular opinion but

I'd much rather be locking dudes down from the portal moving forward if NIL is going to be this sketchy with HS kids. They'll probably be cheaper to pick up, they'll be proven, most likely more mature and have a chip on their shoulder to prove something. Obviously this isn't universal but I think it holds true for many guys.

That being said you can't have only portal classes and have team chemistry. I'd like to see focus on the lines mainly from the HS ranks because those are the hardest to grade. Also, I think the time of not stepping on toes is over. Recruiting should continue at all positions regardless of who is committed and always take best available instead of worrying about scaring kids off from later classes.

No one asked but my 2 cents.

Sure. But will we lock down portal players? Because not locking down either one seems really bad. You know what I mean?

You have a good point. Things happen in cycles. Maybe this the year to hit the portal, maybe the big spenders will also spend big in the portal. It’s wide open now. But I like your idea of targeting those players whether high school or portal that can help your team the most

Kelly said that's not how you build a program

it's about player development and culture

People in the portal are leaving because?????????????????????????

I agreed with him then tbh. But if you can't pivot you get left behind. This is a different game. We need to follow the strategy that works best for us. That strategy won't work anymore unless our NIL abilities leapfrog.

We will become the new Florida state if we go all in on the portal instead of HS. It isn’t sustainable

Correct. Which is why no one in this thread suggested it.

It is about player development, except aomeone else is developing them for us. The difference between high school and college is that you know exactly what you’re getting from the portal vs high school.
As far as chemistry, you have your core guys in to set the chemistry. Recruit your leadership out of high school. Go after great athletes with the traits you’re looking for, and go broke getting them. The rest are mercenaries.

Go look at FSU this season for evidence on why this is a BAD idea. Norvell handled the portal better than anyone for two years and now he has a 2 win season out of nowhere.

Ole Miss and OSU spent money to supplement good or better rosters and STILL couldn’t fully cash in. At least OSU made the playoff, but ask their alums if they got their return on investment after yet another loss to a mediocre Michigan team.

Supplement with the portal. Anything more and you are taking a major risk. Sometimes you have to, like Kelly did here in 2022, but it’s not a plan for consistent success.

I think he grossly miscalculated how much money unproven high school football players were fisten to get offered. The market has tilted in their direction and will have to correct itself.

This wouldn’t apply to a guy like Daniels, but we have to shed up to 15 players to fit this class and get multiple guys from the portal. A few of those will probably have to be processed. There will be a lot of exits this year, so buckle up.
