I think we have shooters
Who?
Of the guys returning, Givens was a 25% 3-point shooter. Miller was 20%. That's not to say either won't improve, but it's going to take big improvement to be "good". Sutton and King aren't really "shooters" (both around 30% on limited 3 point shots). None of the true freshmen coming in are considered to be tremendous shooters (at least not immediately). Thomas hasn't shot an awful % at UNLV, but he's not a high volume shooter (averaging less than three 3 point attempts and only 1 made 3 pointer per game). Compare that to a guy like Sears who prior to LSU was shot 41% on a much higher volume of 3's.
Guys can improve. We saw Wright (less so) and Carter do it. But looking at the roster as currently constructed this looks like a bad shooting team.

Agreed, dont see the shooters, reed i guess is kind of a shooter, and the new 3pt kid. But i dont see a shooters that can take it off the dribble

LOL. Reed is not a shooter. All he can do is try to dribble drive past his man for a layup or dunk. That’s pretty much it !

Reed’s 3pt shot is actually very respectable. Not a huge sample size but shot 13-33 (39%) on the season in ‘23-‘24, and last season he was 4-14 before he got hurt. Doesn’t take a bunch of em but he can knock it down.

Yeah that’s what we want, our 6’10” post player out shooting 3’s
Posted on 4/11/25 at 8:18 pm to LINOESC
Well what we want is a different argument. I’m just saying he can shoot if need be. Having your post be able to pop and shoot threes off of screens and others actions is a huge advantage
We’re more than likely going to add more shooting though of course

Normand is a true small forward whose calling card is his ability to make shots from behind the arc. He can knock down deep jumpers off the move with regularity no matter if he is coming off pin-downs or flairs and is contested.
When his game is not based around the three-point line, Normand takes pride in his ability to make an exciting play happen above the rim. His eyes open wide at the opportunity for late close-out drives and has been a backside lob target throughout the summer of 2022. While he is a solid vertical athlete, laterally he could stand to improve and show more focus on the defensive side of the basketball. By playing for a Hall of Fame coach, effort and overall improvement on that end of the floor will be demanded.
However, his commitment proves to be a solid fit not only for the Spartans basketball program but also for the Big Ten Conference as a whole. Normand draws the Matt McQuaid comparisons due to his shooting prowess at his size and his ability to get off the floor. He will be one whose role shole should increase as his year in East Lansing progress just as McQuaid’s did.
Worth a look

Thanks for sharing. I definitely see the potential the staff sees. Hope it works out for us.

Do you watch basketball. There are lots of post players who take 3s if they can shoot. Not 100 a year. But sure wouldn’t mind a naz Reid out there

its exactly what we want it helps everyone, pulls defenders away from the basket. this is modern basketball. modern offense is about creating space with stretch bigs

Bottom line Reed has never been a BIG difference maker for this team and everyone wants to make it sound like he will be a stud this year. Not gonna happen. He’s an average to slightly above average player in the SEC !

Normand barely played this season at Mich State, but he was pretty highly recruited out of high school.

With a good PG, I expect Givens King Miller Reed Makinnon to all makes strides
It is not like we have Marlon Taylor and Hannibal at Guard. Makinnon was asked to score for Portland. He has PROVEN he can knock down open 3’s. He will be a shooter for us. King shot 130+ 3’s last year. Which doubled the year before and the year before that. He is clearly working on that
And also, I maintain I don’t think he is ready but easily could be wrong. People are obsessed with VJ Miller…Mazi Mosley is a dead eye 3-point shooter. I have watched 6 Prolific Prep games and 2/3 of his points are from 3.

This guy better be free. In 2 years he has taken 8 shots total. Averaged .6ppg last year. If he comes here, I expect it is a ride the bench situation and get in the system and maybe he breaks out in 2 years. This guy is not an SEC caliber player for us next year
I also think it is hilarious that he is 6’5 and called a SF and people are happy with that, but then say that we don’t have length when our guards are 6’6…

You’re the worst poster on this board
Yea, and I will take 7 more above average SEC players and finish 6th in conference and get a 5/6 seed in the ncaa tournament. What’s your point?

Shot 45% from 3 at belmont but his numbers dipped as a role player at unc. Should do due diligence at least.

I remember he was highly regarded in last years portal rankings. Guess he just didn’t translate like everyone thought.
Posted on 4/12/25 at 9:12 am to tigersham
I havent gone back and looked at his whole season or looked for any trends but a quick glance shows he played just 5 minutes against ole miss in their last game and didn’t attempt a shot. Big step up from belmont to unc (we know how that goes.)
