i'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. there is a reason why you have to be 21 to sign a loi. some of you act like the kid should just pick where he wants to go and parents rubber stamp it. if so, eliminate loi and let kid go whereever he wants.
I agree I guess.
But it also seems that it doesn't matter, and he can eventually play for the exact school he wants with or without his parents permission, at 18.
So really the only thing is other schools can't recruit him? I read the article and I'm not sure all conferences are the same on these rules

If the parents have no financial outlay, then I don't see what right they have to make the decision if the kid is 18.
They should be strong influencers, but this isn't their decision to make.
As clearly outlined in the report, Malik does not need his parents to sign the LOI for him to attend MSU if that is what he truly desires.

I think this gives the kid and parents more time to discuss and reflect on the decision. I personally would sign it as a parent, if the kid still wanted to go to that school say after 2 weeks, that would be enough reflection time and then it time to bring everyone back together.
I would hate this for LSU, but if the parents really has a serious reservation about their child going to a certain school, it gives all parties time to resolve those issues.

then why is there a rule that you need a parent to sign if under 21. parents who have raised a kid for 17 years all of a sudden have no rights. not saying they have ALL the rights but they CLEARLY have some rights or this would not be an issue.

Because the NCAA set up an arbitrary rule of 21 that can be circumvented via the Big 10s tender policy.
Do you not read the article?

Dantonio can't speak directly about the issue, but he did speak about process. Ideally you want everybody on board. Family discord can create problems.
Michigan State is a fine school, but somehow they failed to address the mother's concern adequately. As a result she has every right not to sign...period. Of course if he is determined, he can still go, so I don't know what your problem is.

I think the NCAA should be able to implement whatever rules is in its best interest.

i wonder if LSU will make a run at this guy. mom wants him oos and he is said to have family in la. looks like the perfect fit.

Truth of the matter is that we don't know all the facts here. The parents, who will have to pick up the pieces if he crashes and burns, are obviously concerned about something related to MSU. Can't say I blame them.

Sounds like LSU is the perfect compromise. He can go out of state and get away from bad influences like his parents want, and he can still not go to class like he wants. Win-win amirite?

He's taking more visits. Get after him.

The elder McDowell says all four schools remain in play and that they are in the process of scheduling unofficial visits back to the Buckeyes, Seminoles and Wolverines campuses. He added a return trip to Michigan State is not necessary for the family.
“He wants Michigan State, he wants that,” Greg McDowell said. “I know he wants that.”
Greg McDowell says he’s fine with his son attending Michigan State if that’s what he truly wants, while McDowell’s mother Joya Crowe has yet to come around on the Spartans.

you'd be pissed if your kid decided which college he wants to attend? did i read that right?
Yes I would. Deciding on a school will affect the rest of this kids life. If I say school X and my kids says school Y, then at that point we have to sit down and discuss it and iron this crap out before anything is announce. Maybe I buckle... Maybe my kid buckles. But in the end I am the parent and the kid is just that... a kid.
I have more real world experience. I have seen more. I have been making lots decisions for them their entire life. Maybe... just maybe I know what is best from my kid! Crazy concept for some I know.

There are a lot of NCAA rules that don't make sense anymore. He's old enough to go to war but not to choose his own college?
I would like to hear their objections to him going to MSU. As long as he's not following a girl there I doubt they have a leg to stand on other than personal preference. At the end of the day, why would they want him at a school that he doesn't want to go to? Who is that helping?

Doubt it's a girl. I'm pretty familiar with where he lives, in a kind of lower-middle to middle class suburb of Detroit. Lots of good, hard-working families but also easy to get caught up with the wrong people. Judging superficially, I trust the mother's intuition on this one. I don't know if she's a head case or not though.

As previously mentioned towards the beginning of the thread, his mother is concerned with him getting a great education due to comments she heard on his OV about players not having to go to class. As a parent, I can see her point. Sure the kid could remain healthy ad go to the NFL but what if the kid has a career ending injury? If the comments are true, what does he have to fall back on to make it through life? Skipping class and playing video games wont help him later in life. While I dont think players at MSU dont ever go to class, I can see how she would have apprehensions about his best interests because as a parent, you should always want the very best for your kids. Hopefully the family can come to an agreement on this soon and do so without causing any strife between the kid and parents.

Sucks for Mich St. that the parents are being this juvenile about the situation.

Drive the brinks truck to his front door. With coach Haley of course.

Yeah God forbid parents have concerns about their sons future.
