it's very hard to make playoffs with this much roster attrition no matter who you bring in:

Players left with eligibility on table
88 players during this time
You are not making the playoffs with that many misses and it's impossible to replace all of that from portal or from a fr class that takes time to gel and play at this level

Really nothing has changed since Kelly took over with "only 38 scholarship players" or whatever the hell it was. We have about 20 players extinguish their eligibility/go pro each year with another 15-20 portal players each year.

Nearly half the roster is new every year. It doesn't seem like the top programs deal with these every year, but I could be wrong.

It does feel like the program is in better hands now than it was toward the end of O, but man it certainly doesn't look like it...

I only count like 22 to maybe 25 guys that would have seen snaps at LSU. I think our talent evaluations/ players we took is a bigger problem than the attrition to be honest.

In 2022 and 2023 we needed bodies while got our numbers back to 85. We were playing well in 2022 and completely ran out of gas at the end of the year because we had no backups.

We will likely have 15 players total transfer and leave early this year. But that’s going to happen every year if players don’t see a path to playing time or they rate high in the draft. That’s why we can sign 25 HS kids. We are getting there but rebuilding a steady roster is taking time with all the portal working against you and not having unlimited funds for NIL. Tough decisions have to be made.

I agree with everything you said. I was just responding to his doom and gloom post. 3/4’s of that list should have never been at LSU, look at where they had to transfer to. We just took them as we tried to build our numbers back up.

Also, every roster minus 2 or 3 in the entire country won’t have depth because no one wants to sit and develop. That’s the NIL game these days. So at least everyone is on an even playing field in that regard.

Totally agree. The timing of the Orgeron collapse couldn’t have been worse with portal and NIL starting at a time when we were desperate for roster stability.

The number of players you could sign increased when Kelly took over. Orgeron was limited to 25.

This is a CFB problem, not LSU. Everyone’s rosters are being completely overhauled each year.

Can you imagine signing 35 freshman on a roster with NIL and the portal? You couldn’t afford it, you’ll have a bunch leave the following year, and you would still only get 15 or so that would contribute by their third year which is normal for a 25 player class. Again, the collapse couldn’t have happened at a worse time for roster stability.

This isn’t actually even true though. The limiting factor isn’t money - it’s the fact that it’s virtually impossible for any program to find 35 guys who both a) are good enough to be in that program, and b) want to go there.

If you think that, without NIL or a class cap, we’d be able to sign 35 guys we like, just go look at the classes we were bringing in before NIL - the last 5 guys are pretty much always a stretch. And you think we’d be signing *35*?
