Correct. Was this a one time thing or something else? Who were the witnesses? What was the Auburn mom even doing around the UCLA program? Who else was recruiting Jeffrey?
Lots of unanswered questions and I smell a rat. People just love to hate LSU.

Looking from outside in, I kinda see timeliness going like this

Stuff goes down at UCLA (what only a select few really know)

AJ enters portal

Jay see her in portal and calls Waller

Waller doesn't give any inkling of any problem

Jay accepts transfer

AJ puts LSU on her social media

People have a cow b/c why would anyone leave UCLA for LSU.

People start digging and the racial stuff comes to light at that time

Insane gymternet pounces as they always do

This is all purely speculation but seems reasonable

I agree with your timeline and I also think something non-AJ related was going on last fall bc Norah tweeted that she reached out to the AD three months ago and hasn’t heard back, but Chae’s mom confirmed on Twitter that the AJ situation was just a few weeks ago, so if all that is true Norah initially reached out about something different. Suffice to say it’s complicated!

With the AJ situation, I am seeing a common theme of context, culture, and grace.

Unless we get a statement from UCLA and Jeffrey regarding the situation, we will not know the full extent and context of AJ's situation. If UCLA's faculty would have treated it appropriately, there would have been less misunderstanding and rumors on social media. We need to have the full context of the situation to come to a conclusion. Were the slurs maliciously directed at POC teammates (she does not belong in our program if this is true) or was AJ singing a song containing the slur in the gym? Did this happen on multiple occasions? Was there clear communication between the staff and AJ that what she said offended teammates? Believe it or not, context matters.

Another thing to consider is culture. UCLA is known for being the most progressive and "accepting" gymnastics team in the country. Most of UCLA's recruits are looking for an inclusive environment while also contending for a national championship. But in the past two years, there has been a drastic decline in quality most likely due to COVID and the loss of a stellar senior class. When you are constantly underperforming to previous standards, problems and conflicts will show up more than often. In addition, it seems their athletes focus very heavily on being activists. While there is generally nothing wrong with this, conflicts may seem a lot more personal and pervasive, which may have affected this situation.

This next part is based on the most logical assumptions I could make based on all of the info on social media. Imagine an 18-year-old Missouri native moved into a completely different environment, something she had never experienced before. In the build-up to the season opener, AJ said a slur that offended multiple gymnasts. UCLA staff were approached by the offended gymnasts and talked to AJ. She apologized to her teammates, but some of the gymnasts did not forgive her because they questioned her sincerity. From AJ's perspective, she was being bullied for making a mistake, while the other gymnasts felt reluctant to have a racist in their ranks. AJ no longer felt included in the program and felt the need to transfer. Chris Waller and the UCLA AD tried to manage the situation but failed spectacularly. UCLA's administration tried its best to sweep it under the rug, but the offended gymnasts leaked information to people in the gymnastics community. Before the news broke, Jay Clark called Waller to ask why AJ was transferring. Waller did not give an appropriate explanation, so Jay okayed the transfer. Now that the news broke, a good amount of the gym community wants AJ's transfer to be rejected. Take all of this with a grain of salt because none of this is confirmed.

Now, this situation will really test LSU's forgiveness. I believe that LSU's gymnasts and more specifically POC gymnasts (Kai, Kiya, Tori, Haleigh, Aleah, Lexie) should be able to decide AJ's possible future at LSU. If they all agree to accept her fully and unconditionally, I would support AJ in joining the roster. She will need to take this year off to learn from her experiences, gain the trust of her teammates, and recover from the emotional turmoil caused by this situation. Grace has always been one of the most redeemable qualities of a person, and I hope our gymnasts will show some if they feel comfortable with the situation. There will be negative PR, but that is nothing new to LSU.

Overall, I want the best for our gymnasts because they are a part of our LSU family. If AJ's transfer brings any harm to our gymnasts, I fully support rejecting the transfer. But if our gymnasts can show AJ some grace and AJ can learn from this, our team will be so much stronger. We will be able to show the gym community how to properly deal with these tough situations.

Sorry for the essay. Wanted to give my two cents on the situation!

Or just maybe AJ was simply singing one of those songs with those words in them. You know the words that grievously offend except when they are blaring from the cars that pull up next to you on the roadway or over at the next pump at Circle K. The hypocrisy is sickening. Its either a sacrosanct word which should never be said or it isn't.

Konnor did an Instagram live yesterday. I did not catch it but here’s a recap LINK /

Interestingly the recap says she mentioned going to LSU in 2023 (ie not waiting for the Olympics).

I watched the full Live. She mentioned close to the middle of the Live that she was indeed deferring a year.

Bryce Wilson with the 10.0 on vault. She’s gonna be special at LSU.

Thank you for sharing! Konnor sounds like she is in a good place. Some of these people that post say such horrible things about JC when they don't know squat about him or our team. Haters are rampant on social media because there is no penalty for spewing their poison.

She will definitely be in the vault lineup next season immediately

LSU could potentially have 3 DTY's plus Bryant's vault

Well it looks like Jay officially confirmed Alexis in the advocate. Let’s just all hope it was worth it - maybe they can wait out this storm over the next week.

The sad reality is no one but select people will ever know the real truth behind the scenes. I highly doubt LSU will say anything about it, other than perhaps saying they reached out to UCLA. UCLA has already chosen not to say anything but just move on. Again I have no idea what the timeline was of her entering the portal, LSU accepting her, and when the other allegations came out. Those are pretty important facts, not mentioning the context of what happened at UCLA

I won’t say I’m disappointed yet, because we don’t know the truth of what happened. Will we ever? I hope so, but I’m not sure. All we know is 2nd hand information from one side of the story. Obviously something happened, but none of us knows what that something was. I do hate the negative publicity it’s bringing on our program and the extra distraction for the girls in an already tumultuous season.

It’s not clear what happened exactly but it’s clear that aj has allegation of racism against her - context etc is unclear but to be honest that doesn’t matter. To bring someone to the program who left her previous program in under suspicion of racist allegations is not the right thing to do in my opinion, it does not respect the values and diversity of the Lsu program nor in my opinion the other girls on the team. The fact that we don’t know what happened fully should be even more reason for aj to be away from ncaa gym until a full independent investigation has been carried out over what transpired. Only then should she be able to participate if cleared of wrongdoing . Lsu must find out what happened otherwise how can Lsu gym legitimately have her on the team. They can’t just say we don’t know what happened at ucla and we are just going to ignore it. I appreciate the people in these discussions who say the girls on the team should decide and then if they allow her on the team that she should go through bias awareness training etc etc but I don’t think that the girls should have to bear that burden nor the program bear the burden of having someone on the team who has allegedly made racist comments. Let there be an independent investigation and until then she should be nowhere near the team. I doubt this is what will happen but I don’t see how Lsu comes back from this if they don’t ensure an investigation occurs . It will tarnish the reputation of the team going forward, the girls themselves will have to deal with backlash and also will impact on recruiting and fan support. No gymnast is bigger than the program but by taking aj on with these allegations hanging over her the team will suffer.

I agree, TB357.

Let's hope for a meet this weekend. We dropped to 6th due to lack of competitions. Praying the girls are hungry and focused on a 197+ at Georgia. We need to get going before the season gets too far along.

Lost in everything that has happened this weekend.. did y'all see Haleigh posted a video of her vaulting Friday? Also, we got to see Kiya's floor routine for the first time.

This is my last comment on this topic. I’m glad she’s not on scholarship. If what was presented is to be believed, then she should have to pay her way through school. Plus she was offered a scholarship years ago and she chose UCLA not LSU.

On another topic, I read on an Arkansas message board that the meet with Arkansas may not get made up. Not sure how true that is so take it with a grain of salt.
