3 blocks per game is a tall order. I think that’s only been done thrice in SEC history. O’Neal and Varanado for sure.

That may be; but the guy who is the subject of this thread averaged 2.7/gm his freshman year for a total of 85 blocks; only 11 shy of 3/gm avg. And that was only playing about 23 minutes per gm.

Ok. Well.. tbird said Cisse. But 3 since blocks started being counted.. and this cat wouldn’t play 23 MPG at LSU

And why is that? If LSU gets him then he will by far be the most talented and experienced center on the team, especially for filling a defensive role. So him averaging around 23 minutes per game is not at all outside the realm of possibility.

And for reference to all, Anei played 19 minutes against our SEC champion and eventual Sweet 16 team in 2018 and had 8 pts, 4 reb, and 2 blks. I’ll take that kind of stat line, plus a couple more rebounds, from him for this year’s team all day.

Watford
O’Neal
LeBlanc

There aren’t enough minutes for him to get 23 MPG here at the 4 and/or 5. Not to mention days will get a couple there. I can’t see Anei getting more than Leblanc and Watford. KBW only got 21 MPG..

None of which play the role of a defensive center.

First off I have no clue what your problem is with me or over this issue. I never said he definitely would play 23 mins/gm here. I simply stated what his stats, especially as it related to blocks, were at the minutes he played his freshman year at another school and how that could easily translate here.

2nd, in my follow up response I stated that b/c of the role he plays and the fact there isn’t really anything else on the roster like it that it is realistic (meaning possible) he could play “AROUND” 23 minutes here. Not that he definitely would.

3rd, if KBW could get 21 minutes on that roster with his foul trouble, then Anei could very well get the same on this roster, which 21 would be AROUND 23.

He struggled with foul trouble this past season. Fouled out of 4 games and finished 10 different games with 4 fouls. He was the starting center though so definitely an upside as far as experience. He could step right in and start next season and give us a solid 20-25 min per game.

Don’t take things so personally. I just disagree that this guy would get 23MPG for LSU with the amount of talent already on it. He’d probably be a 15-17 MPG kid at LSU.

KBW didn’t have as much competition for time as Anei would fave on this LSU roster.

I mean, this is really an argument for only if the guy comes to LSU. I would hope that we can all agree though that he is someone whose skill-set is needed on this roster and it would be great to get him.

As for the roster competition, I agree that KBW didn't have much competition on that team. I also agree this year's roster should be deeper provided that LeBlanc and O'Neal get their waivers.

However, similar to KBW, there is only one player comparable to Anei and his skill-set that will be on this roster and that is Gray. And with Gray being a freshman and still raw, it is unlikely he gets more than even 5 min's/gm, and probably closer to 2-3 if not a redshirt.

O'Neal and Watford are the only other 2 close in height to Anei and neither are great inside defenders or known for their defense period, let alone being rim protectors. And you listed LeBlanc in an earlier post. LeBlanc, while a great defender, is not a rim protector at 6'7".

I agree because of the depth of the roster, Wade will be able to and likely will use more lineups; but even he has said in the past that by conference play he prefers to go with more of an 8 man rotation, maybe 9 at the most, as it gets too chaotic after that and prevents players from getting into a rhythm of the game. Because of that, I believe that Anei would most definitely be more than a 15-17 mpg player.

I don't know if that's completely accurate. As a Freshman he was 7th in the Big East in blocks per game; 4th in block %, 8th in overall Defensive rating and 10th in Defensive +/-

Now, is he the shot blocker that a guy like Mickey was, or even KBW? No. But he is a damn good defensive player on a team that DESPERATELY needs good defense. Defensively he would likely be as good or better than a guy like Emmett Williams who is a pretty good comp. Neither are incredibly tall, but they both have great length. LSU really wasn't pounded too much inside despite their lack of height. Their block numbers weren't that much lower than the year before. It's just that they were absolutely atrocious in on-ball defense and being able to locate open shooters

If LSU doesn't get a guy like Anei or Cisse, the could still be just fine (assuming Watford would return) as long as they become a MUCH better defensive team. A rim protector makes that task easier. But you can still be a good defensive team without a pure shot blocker.

If the first 3 years of LSU's defense under Wade are any indication then yes...they definitely need a shot blocker to get where they want to go.

Fingers crossed.

The defense wasn't very good even WITH a shot blocker (KBW). It bottomed out this year not so much because they didn't have a shot blocker, but because they didn't create the turnovers in the form of STEALS that helped compensate for otherwise below avg. defense.

Everyone talked all season about how LSU missed Waters's playmaking ability. But it was really his ability to steal the ball that LSU missed the most. LSU went from #8 in the country in steals per possession in 18-19 to #186 this past year. When you are a team that generally isn't great at stopping the opponent from scoring (which LSU has been under Wade), one surefire way to to so is the LITERALLY take possessions (thus scoring opportunities) away from the opponent

Bigby-Williams was easily our best rim defender that season. But he had some pretty good help rebounding and defending in the paint -- Naz Reid (6-10, 250). Emmitt Williams (6-6, 225) only averaged 19 MPG, I believe, but he was one of the national leaders in offensive rebounds per game. Darius Days (6-6, 225) was not too shabby in the paint. I hope all of our current inside players can equal the rebounding production of Reid and Bigby-Williams. Reid and Williams were two pretty good inside players when Bigby-Williams was not in the game. Without seeing LeBlanc and O'Neal play, i find it difficult to imagine how they measure up to Rigby-Williams, Reid and Williams.

I feel like the main reason we need a rim protector so badly is that our teams have been so young and therefore unorganized on defense. That will be one exciting thing for this year’s team, we’ll actually have multiple talented upperclassmen.
