I think he was committed real early, though. Not sure how familiar Jay was with him.
Oh yeah. He was committed before Jay was hired. But he was the third highest rated recruit in the state behind Jake Brown and Kade Anderson. And Jay was here for 1.5 years by the time Lape signed with LSU. I think it’s safe to say he should have been familiar with him

Sat by Daniel Dickinson at the basketball game tonight. Super nice, respectful, and down to earth. Didn't really talk baseball but did talk Utah, Washington, Eddie Smith, Alex Box, Louisiana food, LSU football, his family, etc. Enjoyable meeting.

Trenton Lape is heading to Chipola JC. Good landing spot in one of the toughest JUCO leagues in the country.

Man our new S&C coach is a fricking rockstar. He has been posting clips of the training and it’s so much better than the BS we were doing and today he posted results of some of the guys from the first 12 week meso cycle that they just wrapped up since he was hired.
LINK
Gavin Guidry is up 12lbs in what looks like almost all muscle. Up to 189lbs
Kade Anderson up 9 lbs
Plus bunch of others. This is huge for both Guidry and Anderson though for velo and healthy….especially Guidry. I really think Guidry is a starter for us this year and gets to 95/96 on FB and if he can add another 5-10 lbs by march might be higher. He is still super skinny at 189.
Chris has been awesome to in the way he shares and interacts with others S&C guys and baseball coaches on twitter. Absolutely a home run grand slam hire by Jay.

Will Lape continue to be pitcher only? He was a highly recruited third-baseman. I assume he'll keep pitching, and I guess going the JUCO route gives him more guaranteed innings.

I don't know on the position player part of it, but yeah he can load up on innings over the next season or two, plus the more robust fall schedules that JUCOs play.
It's a great opportunity for development.

It’s hard to imagine Larson not having a spot at least at DH, but if Hernandez is the guy at C then I don’t see how you leave Priester out of the lineup. The OBP isn’t far enough off to justify giving up that kind of pop.
Just feels like it sets Larsons development for 2026 back if he isn’t getting the at bats

I feel like Priester has to be DH right now after what he showed - assuming he doesnt ultimately start at catcher.
There will be a talented guy or two unfortunately just on the bench regardless.
Still I'm sure we'll platoon the OF and C a decent bit overall. I dont know that i see 1 guy starting like 50+ games at catcher when we have the depth there we do. Same with the OF, we can give a lot of guys AB early on this year.
For me the OF is hard to not look like Brown, Stanfield and Curiel right now. Maybe they take it a little slow on Curiel but man was he absolutely amazing this fall. Curiel and Stanfield give you 2 center field types out roaming the OF as well.

Jay loves his lefties at the plate
Priester can get time at DH for sure but look for Jay to go lefty on righty pitchers more often

What complicates things even more at C/DH is Arrambide had a great fall too. Lotta mouths to feed back there.

There could also be AB’s available if/when Brown pitches (if him focusing on OF only has already been announced I missed it)

Maybe some of the pre-conference butt asses won't force us to use the mercy rule early in the year and we can get guys a bunch of work before tightening up for conference play.

He threw 2 IP all fall, while dominating at the plate. I doubt he pitches next year almost at all. The focus for him clearly needs to be in the OF and at the plate.

With Ware and Kade Anderson looking like real dudes, and Primeaux and Cooper Williams looking serviceable at worst, I think the real dire need for LHP is lessened. You don't really need more than 4. I do think Brown will continue to work on the mound, whether that means spring innings or not is TBD. I'm sure Jay would rather be safe than sorry with LHP. Serving some double duty didn't seem to really impact Brown at the plate.
ETA: I think Beck will continue to work on the mound for LHP.
