LSU may have picked up another HS commit, still looking for more confirmation.

I saw a different one, but I'm still not sure the one I saw is real. I'll get Paz added to the list. I assume he posted it on Instagram?

Who was the guy you were thinking about?
Posted on 9/25/23 at 1:49 pm to Tigerboy55
A kid from Oklahoma that tweeted a commitment, but isn't connected to the coaches in any way that I can find.

Update on Chase Shores, he will start throwing a wiffle ball next week. Seems like the family is optimistic he will be ready sooner rather than later. Could be pitching by the time conference play starts.

Kaden Bickerstaff is the guy he is talking about. Something is definitely fishy about his alleged commitment.

Here is a write up on Paz from Baseball America after the Area Code games earlier this summer:
And here is the Baseball America blurb on him from their 2025 HS draft list where he's ranked 12th:
quote:
Paz is the No. 2 pitcher in the 2025 class and looked the part at Area Codes. He’s 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, throws without much effort and touched 93 mph here, with readings up to 95 earlier in the summer. It’s a big fastball for his age with more coming, but Paz stands out for the quality of his full arsenal. He didn’t allow a hit and he struck out five of the 11 batters he faced, using his low-80s slider to great effect. He threw 16 sliders, with hitters whiffing through them on six of their eight swings. It’s a high-spin slider (typically 2,600-2,800 rpm) that looks like a fastball out of his hand before snapping off late to miss bats against righties and lefties. Paz also showed feel for an 83-85 mph changeup that he used to get three swings and misses (including two in right-on-right matchups).
And here is the Baseball America blurb on him from their 2025 HS draft list where he's ranked 12th:
quote:
Paz offers starter traits with his low-effort delivery and feel for three pitches. He has a long arm swing in the back and delivers a fastball up to 94 mph with projection for more velocity coming. He has two secondary pitches to miss bats. One is a low-80s slider he throws with power that looks like a fastball out of his hand and has good depth. The other is a changeup that is advanced for his age at 76-79 mph with good sink and fade, a swing-and-miss weapon that he will throw to both lefties and righties.

Damn. This kid needs to get lost in the woods for a few years.

This is a little trivial but I'm a recruiting nerd, so I found these comments by Jay interesting.
He went to the higher ups and told them "if you want me to win every game this is what I need". It was in regards to staffing for recruiting purposes. "They gave me what I wanted". "I want to be the top recruiting program in the nation".
Second comment; "After we sit a player down and show him all we have to offer and how we are going to develop them and they choose not to sign with us. I just think we are better off without that player at that point".
I don't think Jay meant that as sour grapes. I just think he believes that no other country is going to offer a player something better than what we have here at LSU. If that player chooses to go somewhere else, because of proximity to home, playing time, whatever, then it probably wasn't going to be a good match anyway.

Sounds similar to Ben Kudrna.

Recruiting college baseball is more time consuming than football from all the games and tournaments out of normal high school season you have to go to.
Jay was doing it all last offseason when Fitzgerald and Kelly took head coaching jobs.
He saw it again this offseason when Wes Johnson left.
He needed to increase the staff and now you have a guy like Rooney who can take a lot off of Jay's plate.
Not to mention the draft that comes in the middle of the transfer portal.
He was having to recruit at the Super Regional and in Omaha.
Jay probably worked harder from end of season to beginning of season than he ever has.

He's a grinder for sure. He doesn't appear to be letting up.

Thoughts on Rintaro Sasaki?

A Vandy beat writer says he has interest in going there. I'll believe he makes to it to the states when I see it.
There are people who think he'd get a shite ton of NIL money, but international players aren't allowed to make NIL money because of the terms of their visa.

CJJ has said neither he or his staff will take any time off till Dec. And with his work habits....he's known to use a cot in his office some evenings...that's a long, intensity-filled year.

Robby Snelling had a nice debut
quote:
Robby Snelling’s historic 2023. He’s one of just seven pitchers 19 or younger since the year 2000 w/ a MiLB season w/ 100+ IP and an ERA under 2.00. This group includes Bumgarner, Hamels, Jose Fernandez, Pineda & Painter
