Project, do you think Brown gets an opportunity to pitch a little in the fall

I stopped by the Box this past week to check out the construction of the new bullpens and field level seats. The stadium was wide open because the was a baseball camp going on that day. Jake was signing autographs at lunchtime between the morning and afternoon sessions and I spoke with him briefly after he finished.

I told him that we had seen the glove and bat this past season and when would we see the arm? He told me that the plan is laid to advance on that front and that he is expecting to get some mound time in the fall and offseason to work his way back into a throwing regimen. I joked that signing all the autographs for the kids was the most work his left hand had in a year or so and we had a laugh.

Also he was wearing a brace on his right hand/wrist but I didn't ask about it as he didn't seem to be favoring it or not using much it in his encounters with the kids.

saw enough of Brown on the mound preseason to say he can pitch at the SEC level, but he wouldn't be a game changer. His stuff wasn't as good as Anderson's.

I think his highest potential is as a position player myself

I agree with this assessment but considering the decline in leftys on staff it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have another capable southpaw available for matchup situations especially if some scenario emerges where he isn't an everyday starter in the outfield.

I also think that with our latest acquisitions and Bear returning, we will likely see much less of Jake at first base as well

Me too but with a crowded OF and not enough LHP, it wouldn’t surprise me 1 bit if he throws 15-20 innings this year

This is my thinking as well. Why not try to develop all of the kids tools and see where it takes him. This prospective roster seems to be in great shape offensively in the outfield IMO especially if players live up to expectations and continue to develop.

I would assume time is the issue. There's only so much of it available so time spent pitching is time not spent in the cage, defense, etc. So if a player is significantly better as a position player than a pitcher or vice versa, I can see why a coach would prefer they focus on their better side. Just look at how much Skenes improved when he went PO. He's an anomaly for sure, but he doesn't make that jump without giving up C/DH imo.

They won’t be asking Brown to be a game changing starter type pitcher. They will ask him to be good enough to come out the bullpen and get select hitters out. That’s the big difference.

Marlins expected to sign Rataczak the transfer from Niagara to Tenn. Big loss for them.

He could also very well be the best OF (or position player) on the team. He has that kind of potential. I think they need to find a LHP somewhere else

I just think splitting a guy between pitching and hitting limits him reaching his full potential at the stronger skill set.

I'm sure Jay could do that, but I've heard him praise Brown's ability as an every day player fairly often. Don't remember many comments from Jay about Brown pitching after getting him to BR and watching him from the mound.

I think Brown pitching would indicate Jay is pretty much freaking out about his lack of quality LHP. There will also be the December portal window Jay could use to bring in another lefty.

He can make position playing a priority with still working as a pitcher as long as he isn’t asked to be a starter, which he won’t. He is capable of handling both. I think we all likely agree that he has high potential as an OF. That doesn’t mean he can’t still get some mound work in and be able to contribute there if needed.

there is definitely a world where Brown loses out in the OF position battle.

not saying he will but it will be a dog fight between Stanford, Dalton, Larson, Brown and Curiel if he’s anything we think he is.

If Brown is the odd man out I could see him throwing a bit considering the need for lefties.

Looks like Drew Finley is following Brent Haring to Nicholls as the pitching coach. I knew we wouldn’t be able to keep him much longer. Good luck to him.

Gonna miss talking to Drew down in the bullpen. Hell gonna miss seeing the bullpen too.

Yeah. But those bombs he hit in the fall was the shite tho.

Also WTF chicken? This seasonal recruiting cycle isn't completed until after the MLB signing deadline passes and we can definitively list the next roster.

I still hate it that we didn't get to see the switch hitting Mitchell in game play. Think he will do well somewhere as he develops.

I looked back to last year and the pre season fall press conference was on 8/21/23 which was the 3rd Monday in August. This thread was also started on that day. So as far as timing of the new thread I think that’s probably appropriate.
