Nothing wrong with people getting excited about incoming players. Some people go a little overboard sometimes with expectations from the incoming guys though. Everyone has their bad takes from time to time.
I know I did with Kling. I still believed he could turn it around all through this season. Still think he can but it is obviously taking longer than anticipated.

Curiel might be a bad example because he needs to fill out and get stronger, but I could definitely see Jay penciling in a freshman into the opening day starting lineup.
Doesn’t mean Jay won’t have plans B, C, and D, but if a freshman’s potential gives you the best chance of winning it all at the end of the season, then you want to get him in early and often to gain that experience.

Curiel does need to get stronger but he does everything else so well that you can develop that as he is playing. He is the closest player out of the recruits expected to get to campus as a day 1 starter.
Another huge part of expectations of incoming recruits is the level of competition they play in high school. I did not take that into account nearly as much as I should have when watching and predicting what Kling would be like at LSU. Curiel however plays the highest level of high school baseball in the country. So I think that makes a huge difference in the conversations.

just for fun im reading the comments from this thread from last july
-MJ Seo is my favorite player in the class
- Kucherak/Lape should start at 3B in 2025
- don't sleep on Derrick Mitchell as a possible starter
- Jake Brown is gonna pitch
- Mic Paul playing well in summer, if you take an OF transfer has to be a stud like Braden Montgomery
-Grant Taylor will come back cause his people want $4mil
-Guidry will start at 2B
and that is just like 3 pages.
I need for you to give credit for these takes.

quote:Yeah my post was just a hypotehtical. Of course I'm going to get a litttle wrapped up in the hype when a guy like Curiel makes it to campus. He's an elite defender with a great arm. Even as a corner OF guy, he could earn a spot in the lineup that first Friday.

If Brasswell signs professionally, I wouldn't be surprised to see another one of the power bat freshman (Fountain, Pearson) start at third. I know Pearson has struggled there defensively this summer, but it would be nice to have someone with his level of power getting every day at bats. They may even slide him into RF, who knows.

Can’t believe we’ve went all day without a tiger emoji… Jays slacking

Is Ryan Costello a guy that we are undervaluing in this thread as far as impact recruits?

Hopefully we see plenty next week going through the draft

If we're talking immediate impact next season I'm not so sure. If Jones comes back he's obviously got 1B locked down and who knows, maybe some catcher reps too.
Even if he doesnt come back we just took a handful of 1B/DH types in the portal so it's pretty stiff competition there still.
His best shot would be corner OF which is a possibility if he truly impresses.

Definitely. Costello could hold down a spot day 1.

Thanks for the reply. Seems like a very talented kid. I’ve learned that no freshman other than a Crews or Bregman can be counted on to contribute but from what I’ve read this kid is a very good hitter so I thought maybe he could provide some pop somewhere in the lineup and get enough playing time to avoid portaling out after one year. At least work him in some midweek games and groom him for a larger role in 2026.

I’m the biggest Costello fan that you will find, but it will take him some time to adjust to be a no doubt pencil in. He’ll be extremely similar to freshman year Bear though

Thanks for the reply. That’s kind of what I was thinking. He seems like a kid who is good enough to get some at bats and contribute to some extent. I haven’t seen much posted about him so just thought I’d ask. Appreciate your contributions to the thread!

Nothing wrong with it alt all. But coaches aren’t writing in freshmen as starters at this point for a reason. The same fans who go over board with it will be the first ones to bash a player when they don’t meet the unrealistic expectation they have set before even getting to campus.

Of course. I love talking ball. I’ve followed Costello closer than almost any of our commits. He is going to be a dude! He got hurt at the end of his HS season so hoping that doesn’t bother him early next season

Does Shores’ injury scare Jay/Yeskie from working him into a starter role? I just really like the idea of a giant righty pumping 98/99 with a wipeout breaking pitch starting a game.
Posted on 7/11/24 at 3:41 pm to TooncesLeftNut
I doubt it. Jump had one outing in the first game out of the bullpen and then went straight into starting. I could see them doing the same for Shores with the depth, but could also see him starting on Friday night too.
