quote:I’m not sure how these two things are related. Moller committed 4 years ago.
Lost Moller for 700k. He will get what? 300k after taxes and agent fees? The previous staff definitely said F it on this class.

Jensen was a top prospect destined to get picked, Moller obviously wasn’t that serious about college. Looking ahead you have to read these things and act accordingly.

Cain was obviously doing a pretty good job. I can't wait to see how this staff is going to build on top of that. Recruiting is going to be really fun to follow.

How far ahead should they have been looking when Moller committed within the first two months of his freshman year of high school?
You can make the case that Mainieri would have been lazy in addressing the catching need via transfer after Milazzo’s struggles, the signees going pro, etc. and it probably wouldn’t be wrong. But that’s entirely different than saying they said F the class when the bulk of the work on the class was done 2-3 years ago (or 4+ years ago in Moller’s case).
ETA: Kudrna for example had like an 84 mph FB when he committed and was nowhere near being a top 25 overall player (which is where his actual bonus would have slotted). But the staff nailed the evaluation and unfortunately his big jump happened about 10 months too early. Does that mean they said f the class?

You think they don’t talk to guys after they commit? It doesn’t matter how long someone is committed, you should always be getting a feel for their intentions until the day of the draft. There were people on here saying they knew the guy and he wasn’t going to college. It’s obvious that was true and he absolutely intended on getting drafted and going pro. The whole point of a recruiting coordinator is to have a guy that can communicate and figure these things out.

Totally agree. There’s blind defense of some of this shite and there has been for years.
Just glad we don’t have to deal with the laziness anymore.
You absolutely should have an idea by the fall before the draft what a kids intentions are and be prepared accordingly. You don’t sign a kid a year ahead of time and sit back and say well golly i hope he makes it to campus. You better be out there and have some backup plans.

Not shitting on but just a fact. About 2 years ago Paul was sitting down with the SS Cailo (something like that) going over living arrangements and classes at LSU when the kid gets a message that some MLB team just raised his offer. He looks at Paul and says "see ya"!
Paul must've looked like a deer in headlights. How don't you have a backup plan? Then the year LSU doesn't have a left handed pitcher? shite like that should never happen at least not at LSU.
I guess "times are a changing" and those times are finally now.

Jay Johnson is proving that the brand is still elite. He’s getting just about anyone he wants. There’s no reason we should’ve been relying on Turang and Cairo to unseat Hal Hughes. No excuse.

When you know you're getting a million-dollar paycheck regardless of how little you care, this is the result.

Just doing a little reading on Dan Fitzgerald. He had like 8 guys from DMACC drafted while he was the coach there. One of them made the majors and is still there. He also coached former LSU pitcher Mitch Mormann while there. Mormann is now the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Ohio University.

Moller was never coming to school, no matter where he was drafted.

And that’s my point. Someone has to see that before hand.

How do you know that the previous staff wouldn't have gotten a McManus or Priester after Jensen and Moller went? How do you know that the current staff would have gotten someone sooner based on the flags from Moller and Jensen?
I'm not here to say the previous staff didn't have issues, but I think you're reaching. The catcher position has been a disaster. But, Milazzo was a great recruit. When water started to seep in, they had Travinski coming in and got Wyeth - both Travinski and Wyeth were good signings. None of those 3 developed (yet). Forward looking, they pegged Jensen and Moller right, years and years ago. Evaluation has been fine - development has sucked.
Now, we have Milazzo that really just needs to develop at the plate, McManus that needs to develop as an SEC hitter and behind the plate, and Priester that is a blank, raw canvas. If we still suck at the catcher position next year, offensively or defensively, who do we blame?

In the past, when they struck out they rarely been able to get things straight last minute. Arnold and Labas are the last 2 late guys I can remember that they landed after the draft threw a curve. Like the other guy said, Moller was committed for 4 years. If they didn’t know he didn’t want to play college ball, nobody could help them.

Is Kling still committed? PG removed him from our commits list recently. Anyone have scoop?

Think it's just a website error. He still has his LSU commitment tweet pinned and Perfect Game Scouts posted a tweet about him with an LSU tag about two weeks ago
From a PG article last week:
quote:
Kling has the commitment to LSU and even with a coaching change in Baton Rouge brought about by the retirement of Hall of Famer Paul Mainieri and the hiring of Jay Johnson from Arizona, he doesn’t expect anything to change on that front.
“I’ve talked with Coach Johnson a couple of times,” Kling said.
