New 2017 commit
S/O to AJ Labas 2017 RHP Jax, FL. For his commitment to @LSUbaseball #mafia @PerfectGameUSA
Jheremy Brown of Perfect Game
Nice pickup to the 2017 class for #LSU. Had been North Florida commit who had coaching change. Strong build w/ feel to pitch; low-90s FB.
Really nice late add being drafted in 17th round. 6'3 220, built like a tank. Saw he topped out at 91 mph. Wonder if he gets that up some more with that kind of build.

Here is Labas' scouting report from the MLB PDP site:
quote:
Labas, who is committed to North Florida, transferred to Trinity Christian Academy following his freshman campaign at Eagle's View Academy. Labas helped the team win their first Florida state championship in 2015, capturing the Class 4A title after an outstanding 22-6 regular season record.
Labas is one of many athletes in his family as his sister was a star on Trinity's varsity girls basketball team that won their first ever district title in the same season the baseball team won their state championship. The right-handed pitcher was honored with a 2015 Underclass High Honorable Mention and a 2016 Underclass Third Team appearance.

Looked up MLB Draft signings today and noticed Nate Pearson, Blane Enlow, Jacob Pearson and Andrew Bechtold all haven't signed yet.
The JUCO guys you know are as good as gone, but the high school guys I thought all agreed to an amount with those teams before they got drafted...are there any issues going with Enlow and Pearson or just trying to squeeze what they can?

Since they are getting so much more money than their slot is worth they will be the last to sign out of all the top 10 round pics of the team they are going to.

Wow, what a really nice late pickup

From what I can tell, Bechtold has signed, but they haven't released the bonus number yet.
It's just a matter of getting all the senior signs and low bonus guys out of the way so they can fill up their short season clubs. I doubt any of them go all the way to July 7th before signing.

Labas is a nice get.
Baseball America had him as the #135 prospect in the draft, which put him ahead of Nick Storz and also other pretty good pitchers like Keegan Thompson, Tyler Johnson and Connor Seabold.
Looking at him on video, his fastball seems to have a pretty significant amount of run on it. It doesn't look like hitters can get solid contact.
He's a bit like Lange, in that Lange was a little on the roly-poly side when he got here and then lost 20 pounds. I expect Labas will do something similar as he gets into the conditioning program.

Thank you for posting the video. Looks like a great prospect to go along with the other pitchers coming to LSU. If we can get 2 or maybe 3 of those guys to contribute next year and maybe one of them to be like Walker we'll be fine.

Also, some really nice numbers as a senior...
12 appearances, 10 of them starts
9-0 for the season; 0.53 ERA
65.2 IP
48 H
81 strikeouts
11 walks
0.90 WHIP
Only 4 wild pitches and 3 hit batters in those 65.2 IP as well. Shows very good control on top of the 11 walks.

Those various Florida High School Baseball sites are awesome for pulling stats.

I wonder why he was committed to UNF other than a full ride? I'm stoked, the class really needed an addition like this

The full ride, plus it's the hometown school.

Any updates on some of our incoming guys that are playing summer ball?
Posted on 6/21/17 at 6:20 pm to rookietiger995
I've got the summer league aggregated on a spreadsheet on my computer at work. I'll post them tomorrow when I add in tonight's games.
Webre is having the best summer so far. A couple home runs, an outfield assist, his OPS is over 1.000. Cabrera is playing really well too, hitting over 300. Feduccia isn't hitting as well as he did during the JUCO season, but he's still playing top notch defense. Hal Hughes is starting at SS for his team and his bat is starting to come around, he's got a home run and about 5 or 6 RBI. Mason Doolittle had a game winning grand slam not long ago.
Current players: Mason Templet has a bunch of multi hit games, and a lot of XBH. Blair Frederick is pitching for the MLB Urban Youth Academy team in the California League, his strikeout numbers are pretty great, 8 in 5.1 innings, only walked 1. But his WHIP is around 2 right now.

When you were looking for him on a roster a few weeks back, my buddy told me this is where he would be, but there were still some hurdles to jump so he asked me to not say anything. On another note, is Blair only pitching?

So far he's only pitched. I'm very glad to see him get on that team. The guy from UCSB a few yeas back, Dillon Tate, pitched there the summer before his breakout year. It's better competition than he would have faced playing for that NOLA Boosters team for sure.
I'll keep tracking his stuff through the summer. His WHIP being over 2 kind of stems from his first outing where he got hit around pretty good. But his next two outings were much better and he's still only walked one person.
