Skip as much as I love him was super cheap like Joe Dean who hired Saban because Saban reached out and we were lucky enough to have Mark Emmert as college pres to make it happen.
So like Dean, Bertman was average at best

Not rehiring Saban (yes, Joe Dean hired him the first time) has to make Skip low on the totem pole.
He hired Pawl but there were a dozen or more other coaches that could/would have done as well or better. Skip created that monster.

Greatest—-Jim Corbett
Many of the younger guys on this site have never heard of Jim Corbett, but he did great things not only for LSU but also for NCAA football in general...........

I began following LSU closely under Carl Maddox, as a kid I didn't know what an AD was. Hell, Maddox was forced out due to an idiotic state rule that anyone over 70 couldn't serve, or some such crap.
All had their strong points, except for Joe Dean, in my humble opinion, and of course I didn't care for Alleva.
But Brodhead brought LSU into the modern era in my opinion.
I liked him, Skip, and so far I like the current guy but I personally would not have run Will Wade off.

Bob Brodhead!
This. He moved the Athletic Dept. forward, didn't really give in to the good ole boy network (which contributed to him being fired) and hired Bill Arnsparger, Sue Gunter and Skip Bertman.

Saban never asked for more money. Even if he had, LSU wouldn't have been able to top the Dolphins' offer. Saban was set on going to the NFL, and nothing was going to stop him.
When he came back to college, we had a coach who was on the verge of a national championship. You don't fire that coach to bring back a guy who had dumped you two years before, had always been a job-hopper, and, quite frankly, hadn't shown the capability to be a longterm success.
Revisionist history on Saban is different than the actual facts in early 2007.

My top three would be: 1. Jim Corbett 2. Carl Maddox 3. Scott Woodward (with a strong chance to rise)
This is my belief as well. Corbett and Maddox were in a time when the AD’s job was more PR and just managing the financial end of things. Multi-million dollar contracts and everything else that current ADs deal with were not a thing.

[quote]LSU football would be nowhere near where we are today without Nick Saban, and Skip hired him.[/quote
Joe Dean hired nick, when Joe and Mark Emmert found out nick wanted to come, Joe said,”Wonder how much he wants?” Mark said, “ Let’s see if he really wants to come, we’ll worry about money later!”
